  3. Quick review of eduGAIN service • eduGAIN is not trying to harmonize the meaning of student or employee all over the globe... Always will be up to each federation/country • An entity can not directly connect to eduGAIN, only through federations.

  4. eduGAIN policy Proposed governance structure Overview of the eduGAIN policy

  5. Proposed governance structure Mandatory issuesVery long term documents(policy) Recommendations and documents changing more frequently (technical) Daily issues and very changing documents

  6. eduGAIN policy main components • Policy Declaration (signed and published by Federation) • eduGAIN Constitution • Metadata profile(Technical document describing the few mandatory requirements for participating in eduGAIN) • (Terms of Use – license to use eduGAIN metadata)

  7. Data protection

  8. Data protection • The eduGAIN project has determined that there is no desirable way of centrally assuming responsibility for data protection issues.“EU data protection law makes IdPs responsible for the personal data they hold/release. You can't make that responsibility go away, you can only move it. And to be sure of moving it you need a legal document. Where do you want to move it to, and do you understand what the responsibility is that you are moving?” – Andrew Cormack • Our recommendation is to leave the responsibility to the participating entities (IdPs and SPs) • The issue is legislation – can not be solved by technology.

  9. Quick review of eduGAIN service • Service timelines • April 2010: pre-pilot service started • October 2010: pilot service started • Today (Feb 2011): 13 federations involved in, out of a possible 19. • January 2011: Exec recommendation • February 2011: Introduction to NREN-PC (via e-mail) • March 2011: NREN PC decision • April 2011: production service starts
