  4. Use the Four-Step Plan HOME IMPROVEMENTThe Vorhees family plans to paint the wall in their family room. They need to cover 512 square feet with two coats of paint. If a 1-gallon can of paint covers 220 square feet, how many 1-gallon cans of paint should they purchase? UnderstandSince they will be using two coats of paint, we must double the area to be painted. PlanThey will be covering 512 × 2 square feet or 1,024 square feet. Next, divide 1,024 by 220 to determine how many cans of paint are needed. Example 1

  5. Use the Four-Step Plan Solve 1,024 ÷ 220 ≈ 4.7 cans Since they will purchase a whole number of cans of paint, round 4.7 to 5. Answer: They will need to purchase 5 cans of paint. CheckFive cans of paint will cover 5 × 220 or 1,100 square feet. So, the answer is reasonable. Example 1

  6. A B C D HOME IMPROVEMENTJocelyn plans to paint her bedroom. She needs to cover 400 square feet with three coats of paint. If a 1-gallon can of paint covers 350 square feet, how many 1-gallon cans of paint does she need? A. 2 cans B. 3 cans C. 4 cans D. 5 cans Example 1

  7. Use the Four-Step Plan GEOGRAPHYStudy the table. The five largest states in total area, which includes land and water, are shown. Of the five states shown, which one has the smallest area of water? Example 2

  8. Use the Four-Step Plan UnderstandWhat do you know? You are given the total area and the land area for five states. What are you trying to find? You need to find the water area. PlanTo determine the water area, subtract the land area from the total area for each state. Example 2

  9. Use the Four-Step Plan SolveAlaska = 615,230 – 570,374 = 44,856 Texas = 267,277 – 261,914 = 5,363 California = 158,869 – 155,973 = 2,896 Montana = 147,046 – 145,556 = 1,490 New Mexico = 121,598 – 121,364 = 234 Answer: New Mexico has the smallest area of water with 234 square miles. CheckCompare the water area for each state to determine which state has the least water area. Example 2

  10. A B C D GEOGRAPHYStudy the table. How many times larger is the land area of Alaska than the land area of Montana? A. about 4 times larger B. about 5 times larger C. about 5.5 times larger D. about 6 times larger Example 2
