  11. Wyoming state Hero Nellie Tayloe Ross • She died in 1977 at the age of 101. Interment was in Cheyenne, Wyoming. • Mrs. Ross was an avid supporter of her husband • Nellie Tayloe Ross was born November 29,1876 near St. Joseph, Missouri. • She was the first woman to be Governor in Wyoming. • She taught school for a few years in Omaha before coming to Cheyenne in 1902, . Wyoming Mini-Timeline • 1807--John Coulter becomes the first known person to explore the Yellowstone Park region. • 1812--Robert Stuart of the Pacific Fur Company discovers South Pass, a pass through the Rocky Mountains. • 1840--The last Rocky Mountain fur trapper’s rendezvous is held. • 1902--Shoshone, the first U.S. national forest, is founded in Wyoming. • 1924--The First National Bank of Cheyenne fails, one of 25 in the state. The reasons cited are the low prices of cattle, crops, land, and high taxation. • 1941-1945After the United States enters World War II, about 33,000 Wyoming men and women serve their country. • 2000Wyoming Senator Dick Cheney was elected Vice President of the UnitedStates Barb Austin LCSD#1

Wyoming State Tree • The cottonwood traveled west with the seettlers. • It was the only tree willing to grow in some spots on the prairies. • The pioneers used this hardy and fast-growing tree to make their cabins, barns, corrals, and churches.
