  1. The Endocrine System

  2. The Endocrine System • Consists of glands that secrete chemicals into the bloodstream that help control bodily functioning.

  3. Endocrine System (cont.) • Hormones- the chemical substances that are released by the endocrine glands. • Different from neurotransmitters because NTs travel short distances with rapid speed whereas hormones travel to distant cells at a much slower speed

  4. Endocrine System (cont.) • Stomach and Intestines help control digestion • Kidney hormones play a part in regulating blood pressure • Pancreatic hormone (insulin) is essential for cells to use sugar from the blood • These hormones are released several times a day in bursts or pulses.

  5. Endocrine System (cont.) • Controlled by the hypothalamus which is connected to the pituitary gland • The pituitary gland releases a variety or hormones that fan out around the body, stimulating action in the other endocrine glands • AKA- Master gland (pituitary gland)

  6. Other glands and hormones • Gondaotropins- affect the gondas (sexual glands) • Before birth, they form the external sexual organs in the fetus • At puberty, the levels of sexual hormones cause secondary characteristics • Women- estrogen, Men, Testosterone

  7. Other glands and hormones • Thyroid Gland- regulates metabolism- the rate at which you absorb and break down food for energy • Adrenal Glands- above kidneys • Adrenaline hormones burst in energy • Used in sympathetic reaction in autonomic nervous system
