  1. Welcome Introduction to Environmental Engineering Code No. (PE389) Lec. 1 Dr.Khaledali

  2. Environmental problems with different nature Old environmental problems are often localized and pollutants are more visible: • Smog • Sewage contamination • Oil spills Nature of new emerging environmental problems: • Pollution becomes more global and often cross international boundaries (acid rain, ozone hole, global warming) • Pollutants are less visible and tractable (CO2, CFCs,, etc.)

  3. What is environmental engineering and what do environmental engineers do? Application of science and engineering principles to improve the environment (air, water, and/or land resources), to provide healthy water, air, and land for human habitation and for other organisms, and to remediate polluted sites. • Design water and wastewater treatment plants/processes (sanitary engineers) • Water resources management • Air pollution control • Solid waste/hazardous waste management • Site assessment and remediation • Mathematical modeling (risk assessment, pollutant transport and transformation, etc.)

  4. Fields Of Environmental Engineering 1- Air Resources • Reduce air pollutant and global warming emissions (scrubbers, catalyst converters) • Air quality modeling (prediction, evaluation, impact assessment)

  5. Fields Of Environmental Engineering 2- Water Resources • Water supply and treatment (drinking, agriculture) • Wastewater conveyance and treatment • Water quality modeling (closely related w/ water resources engineering)

  6. Fields of environmental engineering 3- Solid Waste Management • Processing (physical, biological) • Recovering (material, energy) • Disposal (landfill, incineration)

  7. Environmental Problems Cross Air-water-soil Boundary Acid rain • SOx and NOx from power plants form sulfuric and nitric acid in the air • Washing out by rainfall • Change of the chemistry in water and soil • Death of fishes and trees
