  1. What is science?? Unit 1/Day 2

  2. Science is… The study of the world around us Biology is the study of living things. Chemistry is the study of the elements. Physics is the study of motion.

  3. Science is… The process of asking questions (hypothesis) and testing those questions with an experiment. Today we will be conducting a science experiment…

  4. Paper Tower Challenge!! Today, you will be building a tower made out of paper as tall as you possibly can!! But first, NERD CLIP!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FKhOH1jvqU

  5. Engineers – they build things, like killer robots!! People that have careers in building skyscrapers, such as the Sears Tower, are Civil Engineers. Architects make the building look nice, but it is the engineer that makes sure the building is sturdy and can withstand whatever nature throws at it.

  6. First Skyscraper Until the 1800’s, buildings were generally only about 4 stories tall. There were a few skyscrapers built before 1900.

  7. Skyscrapers The most notable (well-known) skyscraper was built in 1931 – The Empire State Building. It remained the tallest building for over 40 years.

  8. Skyscrapers Do you know what the tallest building in the US currently is???

  9. Skyscrapers The Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) was built in 1973 and was the tallest building in the world until 1994. It still remains the tallest building in the US.

  11. Paper Tower Challenge You must come up with your design before I will give you your materials. You may use the materials in any way you want, but you may NOT get new materials. USE THEM WISELY!! You will be given 30 minutes to design and create your tower. The team with the tallest tower will earn 5 bonus points! FINISHED?? Answer the questions on the reflections on the worksheet.

  12. Scientific Method You’ve no doubt learned about the scientific method before this course. Name the steps of the scientific method.
