  2. 248th ACS San Francisco, August 10-14, 2014 Chemistry and Global Stewardship This theme is focused on global aspects of the chemical enterprise related to sustainability of world resources, including green chemistry, the globalization of chemistry, and the responsibilities and opportunities chemists have to serve the broader public. Divisional programming and special themed symposia will cover the role and interplay of science, technology, innovation, and economic development in world stewardship of precious, limited resources while providing physical and economic security for all world citizens. Where possible international perspectives will be provided related to both areas of critical need, such as the supply of clean water and energy to all citizens of the world, and to overcoming the limitations or restrictions of raw materials for products which lead to improved quality of life. Methods to reach out to the public to better educate students and all citizens on the nature and uses of chemistry and efforts to enhance cooperation among chemists around the globe will be highlighted.

In this symposium/workshop, C&EN reporters and invited speakers will give practical tips to help scientists make their work accessible to the general public, including through social media. Emphasis will be on policy issues that must be informed by science. Nontraditional means of communication will be explored through hands-on activities or demonstrations. World Crop Protection Chemistry Institute: Developing Global Leaders for Research, Regulation and Stewardship in the 21st Century Primary Organizer: Dr. Kenneth Racke, Global Research and Development, Dow AgroSciences, Indianapolis, USA, kracke@dow.com The purpose of this 1-day workshop is to bring together global crop protection chemistry leadership from academia, industry, government and NGO’s to: • Examine current state with respect to research and regulatory leadership development, • Discuss unmet needs and future changes in crop protection chemistry that will challenge current approaches, and • Develop a set of specific recommendations for ensuring tomorrow’s crop protection chemistry leaders have a well-rounded, science-based and globally informed approach.

ACS GREEN CHEMISTRY INSTITUTE® Alternatives to chemicals facing critical sustainability constraints Chemists love to use elements and molecules in new and interesting ways in their pursuit of “good science.” Novel catalysts, unique properties, intellectual property protection or creation, publication in prestigious journals, etc. Such drivers have spurred chemists down this path since the industrial revolution. It could be argued, however, that “good science” turns a blind eye towards the environmental, social and economic implications that known reserves of critical materials are being rapidly depleted and dispersed in products in such a way that makes recycling and reuse difficult if not nearly impossible using current separation technologies. This session is intended to highlight issues associated with materials in critical supply and change the fallacious “good science” argument to one of a pursuit of the best possible science – science that is sustainable.

Webinar: An International Student Summiton Global Climate Change Organizers and Moderators: Gregory Foy and Keith Peterman, York College of Pennsylvania gfoy@ycp.edupeterman@ycp.edu • This will be a student-focused summit with primarily student participants • CHED: Division Sponsor; CEI: Co-sponsor • Invited participants will include college and university students from around the globe. • Students will speak from on-location in their home countries • Eight to ten student presenters • Each presentation supported by power point slides • International student presenters will participate through video conferencing software • Other students will be encouraged to comment via twitter • A panel discussion with Q&A will follow the formal presentations
