1. American Chemical Society ACS Sustainability Engagement Event:San Francisco National Meeting Update to Sustainability Stakeholders Steering Group (S3G) Carolyn Ribes – Chair, Engagement Event November 24, 2009

2. Timeline • August 2009 • S3G approved broad outlines of Sustainability Engagement Event • S3G decided to establish a planning group, to include ACS Network group stakeholders, student chapter representatives, and SF-area ACS members, supported by ACS staff • Each participating member of S3G agreed to ask their committees to sponsor the event and identify a member to participate in the planning group • September 2009 • S3G confirmed that all member committees would be willing to serve as primary sponsors for the event • October 2009 • S3G members confirmed that their committees will help to financially support the event, if at all possible • Planning group established four subgroups: Recruit, Kick-off, Collect, and Forum, and begins detailed planning • Event model updated, event web site drafted, preliminary budget prepared American Chemical Society

Event Goals • Support Goal 3 of the ACS Strategic Plan for 2009 and Beyond, which calls upon ACS to “be a global leader in enlisting the world’s scientific professionals to address, through chemistry, the challenges facing our world.” • Gather broad stakeholder ideas and engagement with goals to: • Create excitement about the ACS efforts taking place around engaging chemistry in sustainability; • Brainstorm, create, and develop projects that can and will make a difference; and • Connect with members of all ages and fields, especially those who are not currently engaged with ACS on a volunteer level. • Institutionalize a significantly broader portfolio of ACS activities in this strategic area over the year following the event. 5. Major Components of the Engagement Event • Web site at www.acs.org/sustainability • To provide for the recruitment of Sustainability Explorers and Forum participants • To enable meeting participants and others to submit their project ideas • Will be converted to an ongoing resource after the National Meeting • Kick-off on Sunday, March 21 during Attendee Welcome Reception in Expo Hall • Provides a venue for profiling examples of excellent sustainability activities • Allows for attendees to contribute their ideas on “Meeting Mail” computer stations • Attendees can sign up to participate in the forum or to be a Sustainability Explorer • Publicity throughout the meeting • Link on Meeting Mail computers to allow for easy idea submission • Ideas collected will be sorted and prepared for the Forum • Forum on Tuesday, March 23 following “Sustainability in Action” symposium • Participants will refine the ideas submitted and begin to build them into ongoing activities American Chemical Society

6. Funding Needs • In order to execute this event, we need to pay for: • Audiovisual equipment at the Forum • Table-top exhibits at the Kick-off • Facilitator for the Forum • Snacks, beverages for the Forum • Promotional / advertising materials • In addition, there are several “nice-to-haves” that would enhance the participant experience and the overall effectiveness of the event. • Total expenses are projected between $10,000 and $30,000. • As primary sponsors, the S3G committees are being asked to provide the major funding component for the event. • Also, the Planning Group is working with the ACS Development Office to identify corporate sponsors that could defray some of the expenses. The “Ask” • Please work with your committee chair and staff liaison to confirm how much financing that your committee can contribute to this event. • While each committee budget varies, and cost-cutting has put pressure on all of them, the event needs your contributions to be successful. • Please confirm your contributions with Bob Rich before Friday, December 18. • Thank you for your commitment to building the Society’s sustainability program portfolio.
