  2. The Department • The Department is one of the UK's leading research-driven centres for politics and international relations. • In the last official review of research in all political science departments in the UK (Research Assessment Exercise, 2001), Bristol was judged to be 'outstanding by international standards' (5A)

  3. In the October 2000 Quality Assurance Agency Subject Review, it scored an 'excellent' 23 out of a possible 24. • The Times Good University Guide 2007 ranked politics and international relations at Bristol 4th best in the UK.

  4. Politics at Bristol was established as a separate department in 1964. • We now have 370 undergraduates, 130 Diploma and Masters Students and 45 MPhil/PhD students. • We have 25 permanent academic staff, five researchers, six support staff and thirteen honorary/visiting staff.

  5. Students • UG/Undergraduates: SH Politics, JH with Economics, Philosophy, Sociology, Social Policy, Modern Languages and Theology • PGT/Diploma and Masters: International Relations, International Development, International Security, Development and Security, Gender and International Relations • PGR/Mphil/PhD: focused on research themes of security, development, gender and Europe.

  8. Governance Research Centre • Established in October 2002, the GRC undertakes research related to four key aspects of governance: security, development, gender and Europe. • The GRC co-ordinates and promotes the research of these four research groups. • In the past five years we have attracted £1.5m of income from funders for our research.

Security and Governance • Staff in this research group include Tim Edmunds, Marsha Henry, Eric Herring, Paul Higate, Elke Krahmann, Steve Webber and Jutta Weldes. • Recent projects include: ‘Security and Governance in an uncertain world’, which examined the relevance and the extent to which the multifaceted concept of 'governance' explains contemporary security problems and new security challenges in the world. Papers were published in a special issue of Conflict Security and Development, 5:2; and an ESRC funded project on Muslim media and the ‘war on terror’.

Development and Governance • Staff in this research group include Mark Duffield, Vernon Hewitt, Andrew Wyatt, Martin Gainsborough. • Recent projects include: The Bristol-Vietnam Project, founded in 2005 to provide high quality research tailored to the needs of international business and the donor aid community; Mapping the Sovereign Frontier, an interdisciplinary workshop held 29/9/06.

Gender and Governance • Staff in this research group include: Terrell Carver, Sarah Childs, Marsha Henry, Paul Higate, Judith Squires and Jutta Weldes • Research projects include: The Hansard Society’s Women at the Top Report co-authored by Sarah Childs, 2005 and participation in the Women’s Hour anniversary programmes; a special issue of the British Journal of International Relations on Gender and International Relations edited by Squires and Weldes, 2007; Engendering Security in Peacekeeping Missions

European Governance • Staff in this research group include Michelle Cini, Geoffrey Pridham, George Sanford, Nieves Perez-Solorzano Borragan • Recent projects include: ‘Public Service Ethics in the European Commission’ funded by the Nuffield Foundation; ‘Europeanising Democratisation?: EU Accession and Regime Change in Post-Communist Countries’ an ESRC Fellowship project 2004-7, Geoffrey Pridham.

  14. Publications • The Department aims to produce research of international excellence. All academic staff are research active. • All staff publish in top-ranking academic journals, and are producing research monographs as well as key textbooks.
