    1. NJDOT Update 2010 Presented To: Rutgers Asphalt Paving Conference March 9, 2010 Presented By: Eileen Sheehy, P.E. NJDOT Manager, Bureau of Materials

    2. What I’m going to talk about… AR-OGFC BDWSC HPTO SMA BRBC BRIC MSCR WMA PPP

    3. AR-OGFC Asphalt Rubber Open Graded Friction Course 1 project recently bid No additional projects currently planned for this coming year.

    4. BDWSC Bridge Deck Waterproofing Surface Course Adopted as the standard mix for overlaying bridge decks. Uses a highly modified binder in a 3/8” (9.5 mm) mix. Requires performance testing of the mix design and production. Fatigue Testing APA (rutting)

    5. HPTO High Performance Thin Overlay 4.75 mm mix with modified binder to prevent rutting Requires performance testing of the mix design. APA (rutting) Will be tried on a few projects as an alternative to BDWSC on small bridges.

    6. SMA Stone Matrix Asphalt Continued use on composite pavements due to cracking resistance.

    7. BRBC Bottom Rich Base Course Being used on a rubblization project to decrease the overall pavement thickness. Increased fatigue resistance. 19 mm base course mix with higher percentage of modified binder. Mix performance testing required for design and production. Fatigue Testing APA (rutting)

    8. BRIC Binder Rich Intermediate Course 4.75 mm intermediate course with PG 70-28. Intended to reduce reflective cracking on composite pavements. Mix performance testing required. Overlay Tester (reflective cracking) APA (rutting) 6 projects proposed this year 1” BRIC 1.5” to 2” SMA

    9. WMA Warm Mix Asphalt Current research study being conducted by Rutgers looking at various technologies and the effects on the mix. Three systems have been evaluated and may be allowed for use on DOT projects: Sasobit Rediset WMX Evotherm 3G

    10. MSCR Multiple Stress Creep Recovery New binder test that is reported to do a better job in testing of modified asphalt binders. Current research project at Rowan University evaluating MSCR. Grade bumping is done by requiring a higher grade rather than a higher temperature. Example: Instead of specifying PG 76-22, DOT would specify PG 64-22, Grade V.

    11. PPP Pavement Preservation Program Goal to maintain roadways in good condition for programmatically efficient pavement management program. Tools in the Toolbox Thin overlays Ultrathin Friction Course overlays Microsurfacing Crack sealing done by In-house Maintenance forces
