  3. Why Blended Learning? "Students not only learned more when online sessions were added to traditional courses, but student interaction and satisfaction improved as well." DeLacey, B. J., & Leonard, D. A. (2002). Case study on technology and distance in education at the Harvard Business School. Educational Technology and Society, 5(2), 13-28. Retrieved from http://www.grayharriman.com/blended_learning.htm

  4. Why Blended Learning? "Providing several linked options for learners, in addition to classroom training, increased what they learned." Dean, P., Stahl, M., Sylwester, D., & Pear, J. (2001). Effectiveness of Combined Delivery Modalities for Distance Learning and Resident Learning. Quarterly Review Of Distance Education, 2(3), 247-254. Retrieved from http://www.grayharriman.com/blended_learning.htm

Why Blended Learning? “Speedier performance was detected on real world tasks by those who learned through blended strategies as opposed to those that learned via e-learning alone.” Thomson and NETg."The Next Generation of Corporate Learning: Achieving the Right Blend. (2003). Retrieved from http://www.grayharriman.com/blended_learning.htm

  6. Why Blended Learning? WIFM? • Leverage Instructional Time • Level the “playing field” • Ease of assessment • Immediacy of feedback • “Paper trail” • Parental inclusion • Cool factor

  7. Leverage Instructional Time • Use online content – presentation, assessment, review • Use class time for interaction, activities • Discussion forums for reflection, recap • Collaborative construction of knowledge

  8. Level the “Playing Field” • Ample time for reflection (deer/headlights) • Access content in one’s “comfort zone” • Revisit content as necessary

  9. Ease of Assessment • Grading in content area • Grading by student/assignment etc • Feedback to student

  10. Immediacy of Feedback • WARNING – get into a daily routine! • Students enjoy seeing prompt feedback • Grading in “time slices”

  11. “Paper Trail” • Everything is archived • No question about when/why etc • Students can self-inform on grades/progress

  12. Parental Inclusion • What did you do in school today? • How did you do on your project? • How are your grades?

  13. Cool Factor • Like working online • Peer envy • Less “inhibited” participation
