  2. Grammar / It + infinitive or gerunds and infinitives used as subjects p. 37 • An infinitive phrase can be used with “it” as the subject of a sentence. • It is difficult to learn a second language. • “It” refers to the infinitive phrase.

  3. A gerund can be used instead of “it” as the subject. • Learning a second language is difficult. • An infinitive can also be used instead of “it” but it’s more common to use the infinitive with “it”. • To learn a second language is difficult.

  4. The phrase “for” + (someone) can be used to specify who is being talked about. • It is easy for children to learn a second language. • Learning a second language is easy for children. • To learn a second language is easy for children.

  5. Adjectives of feeling (happy, sad, glad, pleased, surprised, shocked, etc…) are not used with “it”. The sentence needs to say who has these feelings. • Children are happy to play with their friends. • I was surprised to see my friend at school.

  13. Grammar / Reported Speech p. 41 • Reported speech refers to using a noun clause to report what someone has said. Usually the reporting verb is in the past because you are reporting on what someone said in the past (even if it was only a few minutes ago).

  14. General Truths • Present tense can be retained when reporting a general truth. • “The world is round.” The teacher said the world is round.

  15. Commands • An imperative is changed to an infinitive in reported speech. Tell (someone) is used instead of say. • “Watch TV.” She told me to watch TV.

  16. Questions • Yes / No Questions • “Do you like to watch TV?” She asked me if I liked to watch TV. • Information Questions • “What do you like to watch on TV?” She asked me what I liked to watch on TV.
