  2. Smallpox Definition • A serious infectious disease caused by the Orthopox Virus, Varoila. • Smallpox has been around for centuries. • Disease attacks the blood vessels within the skin. Then compromise Immune System.

  3. Originated from • originated in Africa and then spread to India and China thousands of years ago. • first recorded smallpox epidemic was in 1350 BC. • Last case occurred in 1937.

  4. Smallpox spread • Person to person • Mainly by Aerosolized droplets • Contact with scabs or contaminated clothing • Insects or animals not known to transmit the disease

  5. Most susceptible • Anyone can get the disease if your in contact with a person who has it. • During first week very contagious.

  6. Symptoms • High fever • Tiredness • Body aches • Backache • Vomiting • Normally appear one or two weeks after initial exposure.
