  2. Learning Teams • What is a learning team? • It’s just like it sounds. You are on a team. You learn together. Just like in sports, every person has a role to play. In order to become successful, all team members have to do their part. • This is not the same thing as just sitting in a group. • This is what WILL NOT happen • Your first job: • Team name

  3. Binder Set-Up • Please label the tabs for your binder in the following order: • Ziploc bag with duct tape! This is where you can keep your tickets. • Vocabulary • Include vocabulary sheet • Grammar • Include some lined paper • DOL • Include DOL sheet • Targets • Include Target sheet • Notes/Work • All important notes will be on colored copy paper. NEVER throw those away. • All class work can also go in this section. DO NOT throw any work away during the 9-week term.

  4. First Five • This is an activity to complete during the first five minutes of class. • You will have a first five activity every day. There will be one for each day of the week. • Complete the activity with your learning team. You will earn team points for each correct answer.  • Today, please complete the activity for Monday. • Please use dry erase markers only. Thank you!

  5. Vocabulary • What’s in a word? Words are the key to understanding content. • Ballenas: True story! • We will have a vocabulary word of the day every day Monday-Thursday. • Expect to take a quiz on Friday. These won’t just be multiple choice. You will have to know what the word means and how to use it. So, make sure that you pay attention and complete your vocabulary! • You will have the opportunity to earn team points for this too.  • Etymology will be included. • http://www.brainpop.com/english/grammar/etymology/

  6. Vocabulary • 1) nocturnal • Ex. Owls are nocturnal animals. • Latin root: nox (night) • POS: • Bonus Points! (Team) • What is the opposite of nocturnal? • Use both nocturnal and its opposite in a sentence.

  7. Grammar Focus • Why do we do this? • English can be confusing, folks! • We will have one grammar focus skill every day. This is another opportunity to earn team points.

  8. Grammar Focus • Common and Proper Nouns • A common noun names a person, place, or thing. A proper noun names a particular person, place, or thing. • Common nouns: teacher, school, calendar • Proper nouns: Mrs. Ramirez, Riverdale High School, September • Read the following sentences. Underline the common nouns. Circle the proper nouns. • 1. My grandmother came to the United States from Ireland before the Great Depression. • 2. My brother usually drives us to school in his Toyota Camry. • 3. Ryan works nights and weekends at Parker’s Restaurant. • 4. Aunt Hilda bought me an iPod for my birthday. • 5. When I graduate from high school, I’m going to college at Boston University.

  9. DOL • Why do DOL? This gives you the chance to use all of those skills we work on in class. • You can expect to complete 2 DOL every day Monday-Thursday. There will be a quiz on Friday. • This is another opportunity to earn team points.

  11. Targets • What are targets? These are all topics that are going to be very important in class during the 9-week term. • You will get a new list of targets each 9-week term. (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4) • You will have a target check every 2 weeks. • You will have time in class for the first 2 weeks and target check. After that, it will be homework. • How to complete a target….   36. Grammar Focus • Pronouns • A pronoun is a word that takes the place of one or more nouns. Pronouns are used to eliminate repetition in speaking or writing. • Example: Rachel and Joey ran around the track until they got too tired. • They replaces the repetition of Rachel and Joey. • Replace the proper noun with a pronoun to avoid repetition. • 1. Bianca and Erin wend to the mall to shop for Bianca and Erin’s prom dresses. • 2. Bianca found the exact dress that Bianca was looking for. • 3. Erin found a dress that Erin loved, the dress wasn’t Erin’s size. • 4. The salesperson helped Erin look for Erin’s dress in another color.
