  3. Vocabulary • Infer • Ex. From the teacher’s frown, the students inferred that they had not done well on the state test. • Bonus • Sometimes, you get asked to draw inferences from your reading. What does inference mean in this context? • Now use infer in a sentence of your own.

  4. DOL • Lisa she don’t loan her skateboard to many people however she will let a friend use it. • Holy cross church must of purchased the twenty nine acres of land for it’s community renewal project.

  5. Grammar • Take Action • An action verb tells what the subject of the sentence is doing. • Example: The baby crawled across the room to her mother. • Underline the action verbs. • 1. Jordan raised his hand and asked for help. • 2. Mom popped a bag of popcorn in the microwave. • 3. Josh flew on an airplane to Minneapolis. • 4. Yukiko applied to six different colleges across the country. • 5. The class rode the bus to the museum for a field trip. • 6. Hector ate his dinner and then watched a movie.

  13. Vocabulary • Inevitable • Ex. Once the intense marketing campaign was launched, it was inevitable that the product would be a best-seller. • Bonus • Name an antonym for inevitable. • Write one sentence using both inevitable and one of its antonyms.

  15. Grammar • Action or Being? • A verb is a word that expresses action or being. A sentence cannot exist without a verb. • Examples: • Taylor ran to the end of the street and back. (action) • Now Taylor is exhausted. (being) • Write A on the line of the sentence contains an action verb. Write B on the line if it contains a verb that expressed a state of being. • 1. Kwame took his diver’s test last week. _____ • 2. He made a mistake parallel parking. ____ • 3. Kwame was upset that he didn’t pass his test. _____ • 4. He plans on taking his test again next month. _____ • 5. He is excited to try one more time. _____

  16. Plot • EQ: How do writers use literary devices? • Plot is a literary element of any story. Writers often follow a certain type of structure for a fiction story. Are there ever exceptions to the rule? Of course! But, this is usually how it’s done. • Start Up • In 10 words or less, define each of the elements of plot structure. • Exposition • Rising Action • Conflict • Climax • Falling Action • Resolution

  17. Plot Map: The Giver • Fill out what you can on your plot map for the story so far. • You may work with your team. • Get your work checked by Mrs. B or Ms. Taylor. (This will be your exit ticket later, so make sure to do this!) • When you are finished, you may have some work time to begin your team project regarding your selected topic. • Conflict • Characterization • Include Jonas & his conflict(s) • Symbolism • Themes • The Rules (Society)

  21. Vocabulary • Hedonist • Ex. The hedonist did not care about the poverty that surrounded the resort. • Hedonism is the doctrine that happiness of pleasure is the chief good in life. • Bonus • Describe what you imagine the lifestyle of a hedonist to be. • Now use hedonist in a sentence of your own.

  22. DOL • That woman who is buying a ticket must like to travel a lot because she has went to south America every winter for the past ten years. • I ran farther than the other forty nine marathon runners I believe.

Grammar • Transitive and Intransitive Verbs • A transitive verb is a verb that has an object. • An intransitive verb does not have an object. • To find out if a verb has an object, ask the question what? or whom? after reading the verb. • Examples: • I walked my dog around the block. (Dog is the object, so the verb is transitive.) • I walked around the block. (Walked what? Walked whom? There is no object, so the verb is intransitive.) • Decide if the verb is transitive (T) or intransitive (I). Write the correct letter on the line. • 1. Holly rocked her baby to sleep. _____ • 2. Omar ran down the football field. _____ • 3. He scored a touchdown just in time. _____ • 4. Lindsay raised her hand to ask a question. _____ • 5. John drove to the store to buy milk. _____ • 6. Juanita swam across the lake and back. _____

  29. Vocabulary • Abbreviate • Ex. The teacher asked us to abbreviate all the names of states rather than write them out. • Bonus • Select the antonym of abbreviate • Reduce • Lengthen • Truncate • Now use abbreviate in a sentence of your own.

  31. Grammar • Verb Phrases • A verb phrase is a group of words that contains a main verb and one or more helping verbs. • Example: • We are going to the supermarket on the way home. (Going is the main verb, and are is the helping verb.) • Helping verbs are often helpful to memorize. List as many helping verbs as you can.
