Clapiz B.I.D., B.Ed. • Graduated from Carleton University • Bachelor of Industrial Design • Focus product and graphic design • Worked three years at “Ove Design” in Toronto • Graphic and product design consultancy • Designed products and graphics for major companies • Work 9 years for “Koolatron” in Brantford • Designed products • Packaging • Video production for infomercials

Program History • Started entering HWDSB TV video production Contest: • First year: came in 4th place • Second year: came in 2nd place • Qualified and Competed at Southern Ontario Skills Canada • Third year: came in 1st and 3rd place • Qualified and Competed at Southern Ontario Skills Canada • Fourth year: came 1st, 2nd and 3rd place • Qualified and Competed and came in 3rd place at Southern Ontario Skills Canada • Qualified and Competed at Ontario Skills Canada

  4. The Build • TV studio • Design and built a green screen wall • Enough money was raised through fundraising to purchase a video switcher for live TV • Started to build a TV studio with the help of students • Design and created teleprompters with the help of students, (only school to have them)

The Build • Expanded Into Graphics • Use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign to make magazines, product packages, and logos… • Expanded Into Animation • Began teaching students stop motion animation • Flash animation • Expanded Into Audio Production • Using Adobe Audition and Audacity • Make radio shows • Compose music

The Build • Industry Equipment • We are the only school in the board to have an industrial CNC router • With this unique machine, which is used in industry, we can produce 3D signs in our computer lab using adobe illustrator & the CNC router, (all the wooden signs in the halls of our school were produced on this machine)

  7. The Theft • The communications program was devastated by a theft in 2009 • All video equipment was stolen • Took over a year to convince the insurance company that items should be covered and replaced with the same quality

  8. The Rebuild • Purchasing the latest equipment to replace old the MiniDV technology such as; • High def. camcorders • Digital SLR cameras

  9. Future Shop • Communication Technology is awarded $50,000 Future Shop grant 2010/2011, purchased: - New HD studio cameras (used by Colleges and Universities) - New Mac lab for video editing - New Video editing software for HD (used by Colleges and Universities) - New lighting board and dimmers for TV studio

  10. CAD-CAM SHSM • Our CAD-CAM SHSM has allowed us to purchase a CNC Plasma cutter giving our students the ability to produce metal signs.

Coop • Logistics, close proximity to Cable 14 which is currently looking for 18 coop students and has summer coop placements • Students have already completed Coop at • Center line signs (signage company) • Cable 14 (TV production) • Hamilton audio production company…. Highland Graduates are currently enrolled at Humber, Fanshawe , Mohawk, Ryerson, McMaster, Western, and Carleton for Graphic & Web design, Audio Production, Radio & TV production.

The Future • To start producing a WEB (live streaming) TV show using all the new equipment that has been achieved through Future shop “Tech Future Labs” Funds Award and other donations and equipment • Strong ties to local TV and radio stations • Provide experiences in community drama productions • Design and produce signage for the community • Offer animation program in Claymation and computer generated

What do we have to offer • A school which has the latest equipment, (all high definition) • Able to Design and produce 3D signs with its CNC router and CNC plasma cutter • All Streams of communications covered (Graphics, Journalism, Photography, Web, Radio, Audio production, Animation, Electronic, Video) • Abundance of Coop placements

What in it for you? • Cost nothing to sign up • You will get standard first aid and CPR training that cost over $250 for free! plus 4 other certifications • Field trips to TV and Radio stations like Much Music, CBC, City TV… • Guest speaker from TV, Radio, and Graphic designers • Coop placements in the field, to try the job • Reach ahead experiences with Mohawk and McMaster • You may become Adobe certified • A chance to try the career before you have to pay for it (It’s a fact: Students who have completed a SHSM are more successful at college or university) • Puts you ahead of other in job interviews, you did more than just graduated • You can always receive a partial SHSM by meeting ½ the requirements • A lot of fun with friends
