  1. The Hajj: American Literature and pilgrimage A Unit designed for the study of American Literature in High School.

  2. Why study pilgrimage narratives? • Whether they are motivated by culture, religion, politics, or personal interest, all Americans encounter pilgrimages in their lives. (1) To study the Muslim Hajj, especially as experienced by Malcolm X, and to compare other pilgrimage narratives across literary genres give students an opportunity to understand this important archetype in American life.

  3. Why study pilgrimage narratives? The study of literary archetypes (2) has been a common way to teach literary patterns. Some writers have attempted to categorize different archetypes (3); however, there is no real limit to the number of archetypes that exist The pilgrimage archetype is an archetype worthy of study. (4)
