  1. PLATE BOUNDARIES

  2. The plates are moved by the convection currents in the asthenosphere. • The plates are part of the lithosphere which is what is moving into one another, away, and sliding.

  3. Boundary Movement Come together separate Slide

  4. Divergent Boundaries • DIVIDE • Physical Features: • Ridges • New crust • Ex: Mid-Atlantic Ridge

  5. Transform Boundaries • They slide • Physical features: • Transform fault • Ex: San Andres Fault

  6. Convergent Boundaries • Come together • Thee physical features formed depend on the type of crusts that are colliding • Subduction Zones- • Continental-Oceanic • Oceanic- Oceanic • Collisional- • Continental-Continental

  7. 3 types of Convergent Boundaries • There are 3 types • It depends on which kind of plate (oceanic or continental) • CONTINENTAL plate – CONTINENTAL plate • Forms folded mountains (like Mt. Everest) • CONTINENTAL plate – OCEANIC plate • The oceanic will go under the continental • WHY??? • Oceanic is more dense • OCEANIC plate –OCEANIC plate • Same movement as continental – oceanic

  8. Subduction Zone • Continental-Oceanic and Oceanic-Oceanic boundaries form subduction zones • Subduction Zones: • When the more dense plate goes under the less dense plate • Physical Features: • TRENCHES • Mountains/volcanoes on the less dense plate • Ex: Tonga Trench

  9. Continental Oceanic Oceanic Oceanic Continental Continental
