Flight 93 • Passenger flight hijacked by al-Qaeda on Sept 11, 2001 • Crashed in a field near Diamond T Mine in Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania • Killed all 44 people aboard including the hijackers • No one on ground was injured. • Cockpit was breached by Ziad Jarran after 46 minutes on a flight to Washington D.C. • Passengers attempted retaking the plane, which caused the crash
Mujahedeen 1980 Roots • Mujahedeen translates to “one who struggles. • In the 1980s, mujahedeen, with their leader being Osama Bin Laden, were supplied with money and weapons by the United States and Saudi Arabia. • While at the time, the mujahedeen used these resources to repel Soviet occupation in Afghanistan, this gross miscalculation of character would be a major security crisis.
Operations against American Targets • New York • February 26, 1993: A bomb placed under the North Tower of the World Trade Center explodes, killing 6. • September 11, 2001: Two planes crash into the North and South Tower of the World Trade Center, killing 2752 people. • Africa • August 7, 1998: Two car bombs simultaneously explode at the U.S. embassies in Dar es Salaam, and Narobi(East Africa) • Gulf of Aden • October 12, 2000: A suicide bomber detonates on the USS Cole while refueling in Yemen. Caused a change in naval rules of engagement. • Washington D.C. • September 11, 2001: In coordination with the World Trade Center attacks, a plane was flown into The Pentagon killing 189 people. • Libya • America forces raided and captured a Libyan militant convicted of involvement in the World Trade Center Bombing, leading to mass hostility and tensions in Libya.
Taliban • Sunni Islamic fundamentalist group that ruled Afghanistan from 1996-2011, then U.S. invaded, toppled the government for providing refuge to Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda • Taliban regrouped in Pakistan led by Mullah Mohammed Omar • Omar said to have to been killed on May 21, 2011.
Osama Bin Laden • Founded Al- Qaeda in 1989 with Muhammad Atef to oppose non-Islamic government. • Formed ties with other terrorist groups against the United States • Mastermind behind many terrorist attacks. • Killed on May 1, 2011 by U.S. troops. • Used Islamic law to justify terrorist attacks.
U.S.A. Patriot Act • Passed on Oct. 26, 2001 in response to the 9/11 attacks. • Allows investigators and operative to use whatever tools necessary to investigate organized crime and drug trafficking. • Updated laws to reflect new technology, mainly the internet. • Opposed as an encroachment of privacy as wiretapping, and all records would be legally available “in the name of security”
Afghanistan War • Launched with Operation Enduring Freedom on Oct. 7, 2001 in conjunction with the UK, and eventually NATO. • America launched assault on Afghanistan to overthrow the government, after the Taliban led government refused to hand over Osama Bin Laden. • Led to the creation of the UN International Security Assistance Force with oversaw security in the country. • In 2004 Hamid Karzai was elected president. • After the capture and death of Osama Bin Laden, NATO and U.S. troops have been withdrawn.
Pat Tillman • Professional football player who left the NFL after the 9/11 attacks and joined the armed forces. • Exemplified the post 9/11 rise in nationalism and patriotism, leading to a rise in enlistment.
