Basic Facts • Ruled from 1361 – 1352 BC • Name can be spelled as Tutankhamen, Tutankhamun, or Tutankhamon • 8 or 9 years old when he took the throne • Became Pharaoh sometime after his father died • Married Ankhesenamen since his advisors thought he would appear wiser and older • Health was poor entire life

Abandoned the Amarna Revolution • About 2 years after taking the throne both changed their names • Tutankhaten (“Living image of Aten”) – Tutankhamen • Ankhesenpaaten to Ankhesenamun • Reopened temples and moved to Thebes • Believed in the Egyptian gods Typical Day for King Tut as Pharaoh • Meeting with the Ambassadors • People would bring him gifts • 3 hour worship ceremony at the temple • Meeting with Uncle Ay and Horemheb • Formal dinner where he would see his wife.

  5. Death and Tomb • He died when he was 19 years old. The reason is still unknown. Scientists are still testing and researching this question. • He was not known for his accomplishments as a pharaoh but for his age and the treasures found in his tomb. • His mummy was placed in three coffins. Inner liner was made of solid gold. • Buried in the Valley of the Kings. • Tomb was found in 1922 by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon. • His death mask is the best-known work of art from Ancient Egypt. • Carnelian was the reddish stone used in his death mask. • Weighs 24 lbs and is 21 inches tall by 15 inches wide. • Gold was to show he was a pharaoh and because gold will not tarnish or deteriorate. • Value of the death mask is priceless.
