  1. Six Challenges in Building the Smart Grid Consumer acceptance Volume of data and computational complexity Communications Interoperability Cyber Security Providing the ROI

  2. The Future Grid Future

  3. A grid of grids

  4. A grid of grids

  5. A grid of grids

  6. A grid of grids

  7. A factory or a grid?

  8. An office park or a grid?

  9. A house or a grid?

  10. What defines a grid? Control Power

  11. Definition Department of Energy -- An electric grid is a network of synchronized power providers and consumers that are connected by transmission and distribution lines and operated by one or more control centers.

  12. On a nice day, the utility is running smoothly. Everything is “Hot”

  13. A bad storm comes through and some areas lose power

  14. But backup power, distributed generation, and stored energy allow some areas to island and continue operation…

  15. Smart control systems allow the islands to network

  16. This may allow some power to be restored in additional areas as the utility works to bring dark areas on line

  17. Soon, everyone has power

  18. The smaller grids reconnect with the utility

  19. OK, it is an interesting concept, but how does it work?

  20. Smart Appliances Center of Control? Estimates of 45 Million Smart Appliances by 2020 Navigant Sept 2012

  21. 5 Cent Solar?

  22. Recent PV Design Cost Estimates 5 Cent Solar – Yes

  23. DIY Always Wins • Driving a car • Writing a report • Booking a flight

  24. 150,000,000 results

  25. Nellis Air Force Base Solar DOD Goal: 25X25 – 25% renewable by 2025 U.S. Army committing $7 billion

  26. The real question --- Given that our world ischanging, is it best to continue with the same sort of control paradigm, or does emerging smart grid technology require something different?
