    8. Aqua Mission Operations Status 6/10/2012 Inclination Adjust Maneuvers (Aug/Sep/Oct 2006)

    9. Aqua Mission Operations Status 6/10/2012

    10. Aqua Mission Operations Status 6/10/2012 Long-Term Plans Aqua/Aura “Single-S/C-Ops” Goal is to operate Aqua and Aura as if they were a single spacecraft and reduce staff where feasible Take advantage of spacecraft similarities Aqua/Aura Auto Ops (“Dump-N-Go”) Goal is to provide a capability to retrieve Science Data in the event of a major communication outage Eliminates the need for ground commanding for normal SSR operations Science Team concerns over data losses due to Auto Ops Aqua/Aura Automation (“Lights-Dim” Ops) Goal is one person staffing during off-shift operations with “fire-watch” approach to anomalies and data losses

    11. Spacecraft Anomalies

    12. Aqua Mission Operations Status 6/10/2012 Spacecraft Anomalies Battery Anomaly – September 2, 2005 BMA-2 Cell 4 temperature exceeded its 10o C yellow high limit and charge/discharge voltage profile was also anomalous Charge/discharge cycle subsequently returned to normal Successfully implemented recommended charge profile changes (also implemented on EOS Aura) Final Closeout Report released in March 2006 Most likely cause a variable, intermittent, unpredictable short Root cause of shorting cannot be conclusively determined Open action items being followed by EPS Working Group Destructive Physical Analysis (DPA) Report released May 1st Results of the DPAs did not produce any new recommendations for the flight operations of the Aqua or Aura spacecraft No impact to operations or 6-year life expectancy

    13. Aqua Mission Operations Status 6/10/2012 Spacecraft Anomalies Solid State Recorder (SSR) Anomaly – April 10, 2006: Noticeable increase in the single bit error (SBE) rate detected by the SSR Error Detection and Correction (EDAC) was observed Previous increases had been correlated with solar activity Occurs approximately every other orbit Nominal 5-20 SBEs per dump jumped to 100-170 per dump Not near EDAC threshold of 680 counts No increase in double bit errors Flight Operations Team (FOT) continues to monitor by performing more frequent diagnostic dumps Sub-module #205 responsible for the increase No impact to science data collection

    14. Aqua Mission Operations Status 6/10/2012 Old Spacecraft Anomalies SADA Potentiometer – OPEN Noise observed on both POTs – First observed in 2003 Anticipate Aqua FSW modification(s) will be required Noise exceeded FM threshold 7 times on 10/10/04 FOT continues to monitor performance No current impact to operations ARE-4A Anomaly – OPEN First observed on 8/13/04, then again on 9/9/04 and 10/8/04 FOT generated Anomaly Report in December 2004 Discussed at each Power Systems Review FOT continues to monitor performance No current impact to operations

    15. Aqua Mission Operations Status 6/10/2012 Data Losses (Since August 2005) October 18, 2005: ~ 1h 4m 57s of Hi-Rate Science Combination of EDOS problem with multiple operator errors on the part of the FOT Resulted in High Rate Science Data Losses: MODIS: 291/09:43:01 – 10:47:58 (1h 4m 57s ) AIRS: 291/09:43:03 – 10:47:59 (1h 4m 56s ) Operations teams (EDOS & FOT) conducted a root cause and corrective action analysis Improvements in communications between EDOS and the FOT and procedural changes have been implemented Should prevent a reoccurrence

    17. Aqua Mission Operations Status 6/10/2012 Data Losses (Continued) March 28, 2006: ~ 11s of Hi-Rate Science Ground station antenna problem caused loss of command and telemetry Allowed Partition 9 (high-rate science) to overwrite data before the next playback FOT jammed the Partition 9 Read Pointer on the next contact to minimize the data loss Data Loss Times: MODIS 2006-087/16:28:06 – 16:28:17z AIRS 2006-087/16:28:08 – 16:28:18z

Aqua Mission Operations Status 6/10/2012 Data Losses (Continued) June 7, 2006 – Norway Communications Outage Service provider disrupted service on the redundant circuit while trouble-shooting a problem on the prime circuit Instrument Science Data Losses: (3h 39m 24s) MODIS 158/03:45:53 – 07:25:15 GMT AIRS 158/03:45:54 – 07:25:17 GMT July 5, 2006 – Norway Communications Outage Router in New York down at unmanned site Instrument Science Data Losses: (6h 43m 26s) MODIS 186/00:56:28 – 07:22:32 GMT AIRS 186/00:56:28 – 07:22:32 GMT MODIS 186/08:38:23 – 08:55:45 GMT AIRS 186/08:38:28 – 08:55:45 GMT All Previous Data Losses Totaled 5h 2m 58s

    21. Aqua Mission Operations Status 6/10/2012 CERES-Fore (FM4) Short-wave Anomaly - March 2005 March 30th at 089/18:42 GMT the Short-wave channel bridge balance electronics failed to update the bridge settings as the space lamp value fell outside the established window of 50-200 counts No impact to Ops – Loss of Redundancy AMSU A1-2 Noisy Bus Current Rise - May 2005 ART concluded that the observed increase in scan motor current was indicative of normal wear and didn’t warrant further investigation at this time – Review every 6-Months Observed increase as expected in May 2006 MODIS SpectroRadiometric Calibration Assembly (SRCA) Lamp #3 Anomaly – May 2005 Modification to Ops completed Fall 2005 Final Anomaly Closeout Report completed Dec 2005 Old Instrument Anomalies
