    2. Marriage: Poseidon was married to Amphitrite, a water nymph. Poseidon first saw her dancing on the island Naxos and immediately fell in love with her. She refused his first request for marriage, so he got a dolphin to speak on his behalf. The dolphin was successful, and as a reward, the dolphin was given a spot in the stars: the constellation Dolphinus.     3. History The competition between Poseidon and the goddess of war, Athena, is famous. They competed for the city of Athens. To win the hearts of the people, Poseidon threw a spear at the ground, which produced the Spring at the Acropolis. However, Athena won their favor by giving the people of Athens the olive tree. In his anger over the decision, Poseidon flooded the Attic Plain. Eventually, Athena and Poseidon worked together and combed their powers.

    4. Affairs Poseidon had many physical affairs and fathered numerous children. Poseidon once married a Nereid, Amphitrite, and that union produced Triton, who was half-human and half-fish. He also impregnated the Gorgon Medusa who gave birth to both Chrysaor and Pegasus, the flying horse. The rape of Aethra by Poseidon resulted in the birth of Theseus Another rape involved Amymone during an attempted escape from a satyr. One of the most notorious love affairs of Poseidon was with his sister, Demeter. Poseidon aggressively pursued Demeter, but to avoid him, she turned herself into a mare. In his lust for her, Poseidon transformed himself into a stallion and captured her. Their procreation resulted in a horse, Arion.

    7. Marriage:When the gods Apollo and Poseidon sought her hand in marriage, Hestia refused and instead asked Zeus to let her remain an eternal virgin. Her followers were known as The Vestil Virgins, and they swore to remain virgins or be buried alive. Parents: Kronos and Rhea Dominion: Hearth and Home Symbols: Hearth, Flame History: Hestia is the eldest daughter of the Titans Rhea and Kronos. Like the rest of his children, he ate her but she eventually was regurgitated by him.

    10. Marriage: None although fond of Odysseus who she assisted on his journey home to Troy Parents: She was the favorite child of Zeus. She had sprung fully grown out of her father's head. Her mother was Metis, Zeus' first wife. In fear that Metis would bear a son mightier than himself, Zeus swallowed her.     11. History Athena and her uncle Poseidon were both interested in obtaining a city in Greece. They both claimed the city, and it was decided that the one that could give the finest gift should have it. Leading a procession of citizens, the two gods mounted the Acropolis. Poseidon struck the side of the cliff with his trident and a spring welled up. The people marveled, but the water was as salty as Poseidon's sea and it was not very useful. Athena's gift was an olive tree, which was better because it provided food, oil and wood. Athena was given the city.

    12. Art: Athena is often depicted as a young woman wearing a helmet and holding a shield, often accompanied by a small owl.
