What is the challenge? • The percentage of households and individuals still not accessing the internet in 2011? • In the last 2 years how much has it changed? • What % increase in the number of new people accessing government information online has there been in the last 2 years? • What percentage of non users are likely to try the internet in the next 12 months? • What is the main reason that people do not use the internet? This is the challenge... • 27% of households and individuals are still not accessing the internet • In the last 2 years there has only been a 3% increase in the number of people accessing the internet • Almost zero, a 60% increase in services accessed but no new people. • Only 35 % of non users are likely to try the internet in the future (as opposed to 54% in 2007) • Main reason given is no interest and not useful (c) Digital Unite Ltd

  4. The digital divide is narrower but deeper

  5. Who are the most excluded? • People over 65 • People with incomes of less than £13,000pa • People with little formal educational qualifications • This means that many of those not yet online live in social housing (around 4 million adults) (c) Digital Unite Ltd

Does it matter? • “Digital by default” is moving closer • More and more information is ONLY available online • Selective healthcare and independent living support will be online • Those who get online all report improved lives • It is a reminder of many other inequalities that need addressing (c) Digital Unite Ltd

  7. The example of Universal Credit “Universal Credit claims will be made on the basis of households rather than individuals and both members of a couple will be required to claim Universal Credit. Claims for Universal Credit will normally be made through the internet and we expect that most subsequent contact between recipients and the delivery agency will also be conducted online.” DWP (c) Digital Unite Ltd

What is being done by Government • Government is investing £530m with LAs who can show how a strategic infrastructure improvement will transform public services, economic development this needs link to corporate plans, social inclusion and existing broadband initiatives. • To stimulate broadband demand for: businesses, users of public services and citizens (public). Great Aspirations • Government wants the UK to have the best superfast broadband network in Europe by 2015, with a minimum 2Mbps broadband for virtually every community in the UK. • But the stumbling block could be the engagement and demand, DU is working with BT to ensure success at the local level (c) Digital Unite Ltd
