  2. Learning Objectives: • I know where we are, where we are going, and how we are going to get there. • I understand the science of teaching • I can teach “Student-Centered” • I will use higher level thinking activities and ask higher level questions!

I asked myself a question... • What If...... • People in your city are lining up at your doors • ALJC requests us to present our program at General Conference • Teachers both in churches and in schools around the world are watching our lessons to duplicate our best practices • Our Church could grow at a record breaking rate! 500 • We could Reach further, Serve more, and Elevate higher!

  4. WHY NOT? We have the Holy Ghost!

What May look different? • Sunday school being taught at 8:00pm on a Thursday night • Children all over the world watching your lesson • Students presenting to you what they taught themselves • Students placed by knowledge and not by age • Greeters inviting guests to classes based on what they need rather than how old they are • Greater opportunities to receive the Holy Ghost every Sunday • Bus filled with 25-30 students ready to learn! • A physical building dedicated to teaching young learners

How do we get There? • Slow but continuous momentum (AVOID BURNOUT) • Staying consistent with meetings, communication, technology • Maintain quality leadership and sharing best practices • Accountability: (effective teaching, student growth in learning and attendance, website updates, goal setting) • Organization Quality (Admin records, All dept. working together) • Evangelistic Intentionality(This does not just happen) • Having a GROWTH mindset and being flexible

  7. What we do well! • Decorating Classrooms with purpose! • Welcoming our guest with a smile! • Every child is worth the effort! • Working together.....(Block Party, VBS, Christmas program) • Teachers praying with their students! • Preparing for lessons and putting in 100%

Items to Remedy • Mental road blocks / Adapting to change! • Insecurity and confusion between guest and members • Current physical layout not conducive for smooth transition • Lack of development and training • Not working with ALL departments. • Stress, fatigue, lack of motivation • Lack of communication and common goal setting

The ART OF TEACHING • The Art of Teaching is nothing new..... • Socrates, who wanted his students to question things. • Maria Montessori, who did the impossible. • Clara Barton, who served her students. • Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, who inspired a nation. • Jesus, “The Master Teacher”, who saved us!

  12. the Science of Teaching • The art of teaching is about understanding the importance of relationships; about delivering content and the applying pedagogy. • The science of teaching is about exciting research that examines whattends to work best in the classroom and the rigorous methodology of constant improvement.

Student Centered Instruction • In teacher-directed learning, the teacher: • Decides the course goals & the content to be studied • Presents content to students in lessons • Sets exercises & assignments for study • Monitors completion and assesses accuracy of student work • Tests and grades student performance “Hub & Spoke”

Shifting to Student-directed learning • Students can be taught to: • think for themselves • work at their own pace • learn in their own way • choose their own goals • and design their own programs “TDL teaches students about the nature of the Holy Ghost. SDL teachers students how to receive the Holy Ghost”

  24. Lower Primary Creating:Students must decide which character in the story he or she would most like to spend a day with and why. Evaluating:Have students judge whether a particular person should have acted the way they did in the story and why? Analyzing: Students must select parts of the story that were funniest, saddest, happiest and most surprising. Applying: Have students make finger puppets and act out a part of the story. Understanding: After reading a Bible story from a book, have students draw a picture showing what happened before and after a particular passage or illustration found in the book. Remembering: After reading a particular passage of scripture, have students arrange shuffled story pictures in sequential order. Creating Evaluating Analyzing Applying Understanding Remembering

  25. Upper Primary Creating:Have students imagine that he or she is one of the main characters from the story and write a diary account of thoughts and activities relating to the event. Evaluating:Have students judge whether a particular person should have acted the way they did in the story and why? Analyzing: Compare and/or contrast two of the main actors in the story. Applying: Have students explore a situation that occurred to someone in the Bible passage and write about how he or she could have acted or responded differently. Understanding: Have studentspredict what might happen next in the story before the reading of the entire passage.   26. Pre-Teen -High School Creating: Design and Teach a Bible Study. Create maps indicating significant events and places in the Gospel. Design a website or blog that promotes spiritual knowledge and/or discussion. Evaluating: Write an essay to persuade someone to read the Bible. Analyzing: Design a timeline that chronicles the major events of the Gospel being studied. Applying: Using the armor of God to solve everyday problems. Illustrate a pivotal scene from a section of the Gospel in comic strip format. Understanding: Describe the appearance of several key people (Jesus, a disciple) using words and illustrations.
