  1. Revelation Outline • Introduction. (ch. 1) 1. The Seven Letters to the Seven Churches (chs. 2-3) 2. The Vision of the Seven Seals (4:1-8:5) 3. The Vision of the Seven Trumpets (8:6-11:19) 4. The Seven Visions (chs. 12-15) 5. The Vision of the Seven Bowls (ch. 16) 6. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) 7. The Victory over Satan (20:1-22:5) • Conclusion. (22:5-21)

  2. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • NIV Revelation 17:1 One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the punishment of the great prostitute, who sits on many waters. 2 With her the kings of the earth committed adultery and the inhabitants of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries."

  3. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • 3 Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a desert. There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns. 4 The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls. She held a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries.

  4. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • The golden cup filled with the sacrilige and filth of her sexual • immorality. • Externally adorned • And internally rotten.

  5. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • 5 This title was written on her forehead: MYSTERY BABYLON THE GREAT THE MOTHER: OF PROSTITUTES AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

  6. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • Water = Nations • NIV Revelation 17:15 Then the angel said to me, "The waters you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages.

  7. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • The PROSTITUTE is the Beast of the Earth who associates herself with the Beast of the Sea. She represents spiritual orders opposed to true Christianity. She is the anti-church and anti-christ within the ranks of the Church to conform the church to secular culture and philosophy.

  8. The Mystery MYSTERY - It won’t be obvious at the time. BABYLON THE GREAT – She seeks to make the true Church submissive to her. THE MOTHER: OF PROSTITUTES -- Spiritual adultery. AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. She is the abomination that causes desolation to the true Church where Christ dwells.

  9. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • She rides the beast of the sea (the worldly culture and powers) to oppose the true church. • Balaam sought to lead Israel astray with women. • The harlot is symbolic of false religion in the guise of true worship (Hosea 4:10-15). • In the Old and New Testaments, the pagan religions that surrounded God’s people had prostitution as a key element of worship.

  10. Spiritual adultery • Religious unfaithfulness to God equated spiritual prostitution – seeking wrong pleasure and vain love. • NIV James 4:4 You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God

  11. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • The harlot is clothed in luxurious clothing and adorned with jewels. Her beauty is external and vain. Inside, she is as ugly and rotten as the dickens. Her love is vain and selfish. Babylon is the city where God’s people were taken and held in bondage.

  12. Again, let’s review… MYSTERY – This won’t be obvious to many. BABYLON THE GREAT – She is responsible for the oppression and “exile” of many true believers. THE MOTHER: OF PROSTITUTES AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH – She encourages people to elevate human desires and their aftermath over the Word and Will of the Spirit.

  13. The Pseudo-Church • Unlike the persecuted (and faithful) woman who represents the Church, the pseudo-church is a taunting persecutor! She is shown as the source of true exile and persecution (Babylon) contrasted to the city of God (the new Jerusalem). The nations of the earth will delight in what she does in opposing true Christianity.

  14. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • Only those who have special revelation from the Holy Spirit understand the mystery. Notice the emphasis is that she is a mystery! The world will completely be surprised by who the harlot was at the end of time. The world will recognize many renown and respected religious leaders as the harlot.

  15. The Beast of the Land / The Great Prostitute

  16. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • She is the false church and religion assuming to be the true Church on earth. She delights in the demise of the children of the true Church – those who cherish the Bible in all truth (12:17).

  17. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • She leads souls astray by elevating the worship of reason and feeling above God and His Word.

  18. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • She follows the tactics of Satan in Eden to make the world feel they are “missing out” if they wholeheartedly adopt and obey God’s Word.

  19. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • 6 I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of the saints, the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus. When I saw her, I was greatly astonished. 7 Then the angel said to me: "Why are you astonished? I will explain to you the mystery of the woman and of the beast she rides, which has the seven heads and ten horns.

  20. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • 8 The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction. The inhabitants of the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the creation of the world will be astonished when they see the beast, because he once was, now is not, and yet will come.

  21. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • This is the mystery revealed also. • Those who follow Satan do not think about the fact that they will see this angel judged on the Last Day.

  22. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • 9 "This calls for a mind with wisdom. The seven heads are seven hills on which the woman sits. 10 They are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; but when he does come, he must remain for a little while.

  23. Seven kingdoms 1. Egypt. Was. 2. Assyria. Was. 3. Babylon. Was. 4. Persia. Was. 5. Greece. Was. 6. Rome. The one that is. 7. Crumbled feet of clay in Daniel? Western Civilization? One yet to come?

  24. The Crumbled Feet is Western Civ. That influences all nations and spreads to this day.

  25. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • The woman rises above the peoples of the earth. When one king or kingdom has served its usefulness, the beast arises in another form to the very end.

  26. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • What we can clearly teach is that authorities opposed to the Church’s purposes will rise and fall to the very end.

  27. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • 11 The beast who once was, and now is not, is an eighth king. He belongs to the seven and is going to his destruction.

  28. The 8th King • This is Satan himself who is judged at the end. All kingdoms of the earth are judged in the procession leading up to Satan’s judgment. • 17:8 The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction.

  29. Explained more thoroughly • 12 "The ten horns you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but who for one hour will receive authority as kings along with the beast. 13 They have one purpose and will give their power and authority to the beast.

  30. The Beast of the “Nations” • 10 = number of completion. • There are a set number of rulers who arise and oppose the church.

  31. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • 14 They will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will overcome them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings-- and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers."

  32. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • 15 Then the angel said to me, "The waters you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages.

  33. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • 16 The beast and the ten horns you saw will hate the prostitute. They will bring her to ruin and leave her naked; they will eat her flesh and burn her with fire.

  34. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • 1. After Christianity seems to be in demise (presently or after the judgment), the nations of the earth will turn on this harlot (the false church) as she has served her purpose for them (v.16). • 2. And / or, this occurs in hell.

  35. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • 17 For God has put it into their hearts to accomplish his purpose by agreeing to give the beast their power to rule, until God's words are fulfilled.

  36. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • 18 The woman you saw is the great city that rules over the kings of the earth. • She receives recognition and dignity from the secular world for achieving their purposes. • The Great City is another reference to Babylon. 18:21.

  37. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • NIV James 4:4 You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

  38. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • NIV Revelation 18:1 After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven. He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor. 2 With a mighty voice he shouted:

  39. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • "Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great! She has become a home for demons and a haunt for every evil spirit, a haunt for every unclean and detestable bird.

  40. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • Detestable bird? • Birds of carrion are attracted to that which is dead. Demons find an abode with the damned and dead before God. • Noah released a bird of carrion that was not afraid to land on the judged. He had to release a bird that only landed on that which is living: The dove.

  41. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • 3 For all the nations have drunk the maddening wine of her adulteries. The kings of the earth committed adultery with her, and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries.“ • The false church encourages kings and people to worship their own desires. • John the Baptist didn’t. Mark 6:18. For John said of to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."

  42. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • The false-church took “personal sacrifice” out of following the Lord. • She provided the way of ease and comfort, instead of sacrifice and surrender of self to Christ and His ways.

  43. The Victory over Antichrist (chs. 17-19) • 4 Then I heard another voice from heaven say: "Come out of her, my people, so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues; 5 for her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her crimes.
