Mr. Charvat- continued • Hobbies- Sports, computers, vacations, music, television, and family. • This year I teach Spanish 2, Spanish 4, and Spanish 5 • I am a member of the Technology Committee at SHS • Studied in Puebla, Mexico • Traveled to Costa Rica in the summer of 2005, 2008. • Traveled to Spain in the summer of 2006, 2010. • Traveled to Ecuador in the summer of 2011. • I am also a graduate of Schaumburg High School- don’t ask what year!

  6. If your son or daughter needs help ... • they can see me by appointment periods 3 and 8. • they can see me before school 6:45-7:25 am. • I can get them help from National Honor Society • they can email me at gcharvat@d211.org

  7. Is there homework in Spanish? • Do birds fly? • Of course there is! Usually there is homework every night! On average 15-20 minutes a night. • Homework is usually worksheets or workbook pages, but can also take the form of essays, video creation, or computer projects.

  8. Course Content • Text-EspañolEsencial • (grammar workbook) • Album (reader) • Reading • Short Stories • Adapted Novels • Argentina, other cultural units • Immersion into Spanish Language and Culture • All Spanish! • Junior-Senior • Perfecting skills-reading, writing, grammar, listening etc.

  9. GRADING POLICY The Quarter Grade is Divided into three equal categories- each category is worth one-third of the quarter grade. • Quizzes- one every week • Orals- daily- includes everything except for quizzes and tests • Tests- one every 2-4 weeks

  10. Each student will be given a 50 point daily homework grade each quarter. This grade is posted at the end of the quarter! If your son or daughter has missed three assignments by midterm it will be indicated on their midterm report. Grading- continued

Reasons for continuing in Spanish • Opportunity to receive college credit in High School (AP). • Foreign language learning helps students on the vocabulary sections of the ACT and SAT tests. • Improved job opportunities in the future. • Learn about other cultures and their customs and traditions! • Communicate with people from other countries. • It is fun!

  15. Opportunities for continued success! • Encourage your children to listen to Spanish music! • Encourage your children to watch Spanish television. • Search the Internet for Spanish sites. Try Yahoo en Español. • Eat in Spanish and Mexican restaurants. • Read Spanish and Mexican magazines. • Try out various computer programs for practicing Spanish.

  18. Foreign Exchange • This summer there will be a Foreign Exchange trip to Guatemala/Belice. The trip will be in June. • Details will be coming soon!
