Coordination And integration Resources Products Integrating the expert and expertise basis WP2 Internet Platform for Cybertaxonomy WP5 WP1 Integrating the infrastructure basis EDIT coordination and management WP3 Unifying Revisionary taxonomy WP6 Applying taxonomy to conservation WP7 Coordinating research WP4 Training and Public Awareness WP8 1-Introduction WP4 is one of the eightworkpackages of the EDIT project. It is Lead by the Spanish CSIC. This workpackage address the scientific and cultural impediments which hamper development of taxonomic new knowledge to fulfil the needs of scientific and other stakeholders, including top management levels. 4. 3-Organization WP Leader: Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (Spain) CSIC Institutes participating: • Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales –leader-, • Real Jardín Botánico, • Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Blanes, • Instituto de Ciencias del Mar (Barcelona) Kickoff Meeting

  5. 3-Organization • Constraints Hiring not possible until contract were signed and a copy available to CSIC WP4 not started at due time: few activities undertaken to date Kickoff Meeting

  6. 2-Objectives • General • Maximise the efficiency of the extant organizational effort by promoting synergies among research teams within EDIT and beyond, : • by exploring prospective areas for future collaborative efforts and • by identifying end users and their needs from the field of taxonomy. Kickoff Meeting

  7. 2-Objectives • For the 5 Years: • Maximise the efficiency and scientific excellence of the extant organizational effort by promoting synergies among research teams within EDIT and beyond. • Link taxonomic research with societal requirements (end user communities). • “Scientific alertness”: Explore prospecting areas for future collaborative projects. This will include emerging research topics and new tools and technologies. • Develop a durable integrated research agenda for the EDIT roadmap. • Organize competitive calls for tender and follow up projects Kickoff Meeting

  8. 2-Objectives EDIT Governing Boards (NSC, SAC, BD) EDIT Roadmap Proposals objective-driven research Other EDIT WPs CETAF End Users Liaison Group Research Agenda WP4 WP4 “Scientific Alertness Group” Researchers Kickoff Meeting

  9. 4-Activities • 4.1 Integrating research projects within and beyond EDIT • 4.2 Design and establish mechanism for call for tenders and follow-up of projects • 4.3 Liason research / End-users • 4.4Scientific alertness: prospecting new and emerging opportunities • 4.5 Progress towards an Integrated Research Agenda Kickoff Meeting

  10. 2-Objectives • First 18 months • Set up blueprint for coordination of research projects within EDIT • Link taxonomy with societal requirements (end users). • Prospect for new research topics and new tools and technologies for taxonomic identification, and for implementation of corresponding collaborative projects. Kickoff Meeting

  11. 2-Objectives • 4.1Integrating research projects within and beyond EDIT • Specific goal: • Promote collaboration and complementarity among research teams within EDIT and establish mechanisms for integration of non-EDIT experts • Deliverables • Report on the state-of-the-art taxonomic research within EDIT (month 18) (collaboration with NHMD) • Agenda for thematic EDIT meetings (month 10 - 18+) • Draft and agreed guidelines for selecting pilot projects (month 12-18) • Preliminary database of potential evaluators of projects (month 18+) (NHMD) Kickoff Meeting

  12. 4-Activities • 4.1Integrating research projects within and beyond EDIT • Proposal • Explore within EDIT institutions and through a bibliometrical analysis in collaboration with the Centro de Información y Documentación (CINDOC) of the CSIC: Who?, With whom?, Where?, Which group? Geographical areas? Methodologies?…….. Kickoff Meeting

  13. 2-Objectives • 4.2Liaison research / End-users • Specific goals: • Identification and categorization of end users groups. • Assess end users’ needs for taxonomy by sectors of end users • Deliverables: • Web platform for e-conferences (month 4) (WP1) • Report on brainsturming e-conference to identify potential end user groups and decide on how to assess their taxonomic needs (month 12) • Draft report on research – end user liaison (month 12) (probably postponed) • Structure and terms of reference for liaison group (month 18) (INRA) Kickoff Meeting

  14. 4-Activities • 4.2Liaison research / End-users Many activities postponed until hiring Kickoff Meeting

  15. 2-Objectives • 4.3Scientific alertness: prospecting new and emerging opportunities • Specific goals: • Prospect new areas for integrated research in EDIT, e.g., as identified from SAC, liaison groups, NSC and BD • Prospect new tools and technologies for improving rapid taxonomic identification Kickoff Meeting

  16. 2-Objectives • 4.3Scientific alertnesss: prospecting new and emerging opportunities • Description of work: • Setting up an “alertness group” to prospect emerging opportunities (methods, tools, etc.). • Organising workshops on already identified topics, including DNA Bar-coding (in collaboration with WP3), Morphometrics-Image Recognition and Sounds (for acoustic animals) • Establishing a taskforce for organizing further workshops on themes suggested by alertness group, NSC, SAC, liaison groups or by CETAF, or emerging from the WP2 information on ongoing research. Kickoff Meeting

  17. 4-Activities • 4.3Scientific alertness: prospecting new and emerging opportunities • Proposal: “Alertness Group” should cover at least: • Conceptual advances in Taxonomy • Technological innovation for potential taxonomic application (Image analysis -XR, CTScan, ESEM, Communication, Robotics, Molecular biology, Proteomics, etc) • Information accessibility through Internet (databases, cartography, PDF-bibliography, etc) • Others to be identified Kickoff Meeting

  18. 4-Activities • 4.3Scientific alertnesss: prospecting new and emerging opportunities • Description of work: • Setting up an “alertness group” to prospect emerging opportunities (methods, tools, etc.). • Organising workshops on already identified topics, including DNA Bar-coding (in collaboration with WP3), Morphometrics-Image Recognition and Sounds (for acoustic animals) • Establishing a taskforce for organizing further workshops on themes suggested by alertness group, NSC, SAC or liaison groups, or emerging from the WP2 information on ongoing research.
