Norris Herndon - they both work in a life insurance company. PROFILE Where do you live? On a farm near Social Circle in Walton County. Where were you born? On a farm near Social Circle in Walton County What is your family like? They were slaves, but now they are sharecroppers. Where were you educated? Somewhere in Walton County. How far did you go in your education? For approximately 1 year of school. What do you do for a living? I own a barber shop and it’s growing. I also created the Atlanta Family Life Insurance Company. Philosophies – me and my family are Christians. If I had to be anybody in the world I would love to be like my mom. Arts & Entertainment –i always play games with my brothers and sisters outside the farm. Activities & Interests –I love to cut hair ,so I guess cutting hair is my hobby. STATUS I left the social circle on foot with 11 dollars and a year of schooling to start my own life. I stopped intentionally in Coweta County to work as a farmhand and learn the barbering trade. After a few months I migrated to Jonesboro and started my own barber shop. Right now I’m just staying here getting as a good reputation as a barber and developing a good business. WALL What are other people saying to you? -Known from Richmond all the way to Mobile as the best barber in the south. -there was a growing market of white men in post-Emancipation Atlanta who were accustomed to serviced by blacks , Herndon was eager to capitalize on it.
