  2. In the beginning... • American colonies belonged to England. • How many colonies were there? • What were they? COLONIES MAP

Events Leading to the American Revolution • French and Indian War (1754-1763) • Fought over territory between colonists and natives • Treaty ends the war • Gives Great Britain the land from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River • RESULT: • Britain believes colonists should bear costs of war • Began imposing taxes • Colonists resented because……. • NO REPRESENTATION in PARLIAMENT

  4. Events Leading to the American Revolution 2. Proclamation of 1763 • Declared all land WEST of the APPALACHIAN mountains OFF-LIMITS to colonists • It would belong to the Native Americans • Why did Great Britain not want the colonists to move past the “line”?

  5. Events Leading to the American Revolution 3. Stamp Act (1765) • Required colonists to have documents, deeds, licenses, newspapers, etc. officially stamped to show that taxes had been paid on the document • Placed a tax on most paper products • Even PLAYING cards!!

  7. Events Leading to the American Revolution 5. Boston Massacre (March 5, 1770) • Incident in which angry colonists were fired upon after hitting British soldiers with snowballs and other items • Five colonists were killed or mortally wounded • Used as propaganda against the British

  8. Events Leading to the American Revolution 6. Boston Tea Party (1773) • In response to Tea Act of 1773 • Colonists dressed up as Indians and dumped tea from the East India Tea Company into the Boston Harbor

  10. Events Leading to the American Revolution 8. First Continental Congress (September 1775) • 56 delegates met in Philadelphia • Voted to boycott British goods UNLESS….. • Intolerable Acts were repealed • Parliament defeated the bill to overturn the Intolerable Acts

  11. Events Leading to the American Revolution 9. Lexington and Concord (April 1775) • Shot fired on an unknown person • Caused British to open fire on Minutemen • American militia fought back at the battles • Forced British to retreat to Boston

  12. Grievances of the American Colonists • Taxation without their consent • Colonists did not have representation in Parliament • Colonists did not think they were receiving rights as Englishmen • Britain was slowly taking away the colonists right to govern themselves

  13. Response to Grievances Colonists respond with the First Continental Congress and write a letter to King George III with complaints. • Their GOALwas to be heard and gain fair treatment When the king does not give in to demands the American Revolution begins.
