GaneshChaturthi begins on Shukla Chaturthi • Ganesh Chaturthi festival begins on the Shukla Chaturthi which falls on the 4th day of the waxing of the moon period. • The festival comes to an end on the 14th day of the waxing of the moon period, which is known as the Anant Chaturdashi in Hindu calendar.

  4. Important events that occur during this festival • Colorful tents also known as pandals (temporary shrines) are set up in every districts and towns. • Lord Ganesh’s Idol is placed in those pandals for worship all throughout the 10 day festival.

Major rituals that are carried out during the festival • There are 4 major rituals that are carried out during this festive season:- • Pranapratishtha :- The process of impregnating the deity into a murti or an idol. • Shodashopachara:- The different forms of paying tribute to the Lord Ganesh (16 forms in total). • Utarpuja:- This ritual concludes the ritual worships of Lord Ganesh. • Ganapati Visarjan:- The final ritual that commences the end of the festive season, this involves the immersion of the Idol in the river.

  6. Sweets • The most famous sweet that is prepared during this festive season are Modaks. • Modaks are prepared using rice flour, jaggery and dry fruits. • Interesting fact:- Every plate must have 21 pieces of Modak sweets.

Origin of the festival • Ganesh Chaturthi was first officially celebrated by the public during the time of Maratha King Shivaji. • But the first Lord Ganesh Idol was installed by Bhaushsaheb Laxman Javale. • This festival changed from being a private celebration to a public celebration so as to bridge the gap between Brahmins and the Non – Brahmins and to bring them together in unity.
