  • Sections:

    • Title

    • Abstract

    • Introduction

    • Materials & Methods

    • Results

    • Discussion

Poster presentation2

POSTER PRESENTATION

  • Title:

    • Should be appropriate to experiment conducted

    • Include full names of all group members

  • Abstract:

    • Short paragraph that summarizes entire experiment

    • Should include general trends in data and major conclusions

  • Introduction:

    • What was the purpose of the experiment?

    • Give background on experiment, function of instruments, specialized techniques used, species anatomy & physiology

    • Two sources from scientific journal

Poster presentation3

POSTER PRESENTATION

  • Materials & Methods:

    • Mention major instruments used

    • Don’t detail every step; just indicate overall approach

  • Results:

    • Display data in TEXT and graphical / tabular form

    • Point out salient features of data (trends, etc..)

Poster presentation4

POSTER PRESENTATION

  • Discussion:

    • Tell audience what data signifies. Give interpretation

    • Mention error (in experimental design, instrumentation, etc..), especially if it may have influenced results

    • Note how data taken together fits into the big picture

    • Suggest directions for future research

  • References:

    • Two citations

    • Use format on course web site

HUMAN RENAL PHYSIOLOGY

  • Regulation of Body Fluid Volume:

    • Kidneys influence fluid volume by:

Human renal physiology1

HUMAN RENAL PHYSIOLOGY

  • Retention of Water is controlled by ADH:

    • Anti Diuretic Hormone

    • ADH Release Is Controlled By:

PHYSIOLOGY

HOMEOSTATIC MECHANISM FOR WATER BALANCE IS MEDIATED BY ADH

Human renal physiology2

HUMAN RENAL PHYSIOLOGY

  • Maintain Body Fluid Volume but Increase Body Fluid Osmolarity:

    • Eating salty food (chips) without fluid intake

Human renal physiology3

HUMAN RENAL PHYSIOLOGY

  • Increase Body Fluid Volume and Decrease Body Fluid Osmolarity:

    • Drink pure (distilled) water

Human renal physiology4

HUMAN RENAL PHYSIOLOGY

  • What about Presence of Sugar Versus Artificial Sweeteners?

    • Coke:

    • Diet Coke:

Human renal physiology5

HUMAN RENAL PHYSIOLOGY

  • What about presence of Caffeine?

    • Caffeinated Coke:

      • Removal of H2O in urine = diuresis

  • Decaffeinated Coke:
