  5. Educational Reform Expenditures Consultants Coaches Support Teachers Credentialed Tutors Reading Intervention Teachers Funding Categorical HPSG IIUSP At Hidalgo, we received almost $1,000,000 in HPSG funding alone. In all of this frenzy of spending and reform, we have never even looked at a very critical area of our profession:

  6. Educational Reform How are we delivering direct instruction to our students??? How are we engaging our students in the direct instruction we provide??? Research shows that kids learn more when they WATCH what we are presenting!!!! Who would’ve thought….????

  7. Hidalgo Technology Basic philosophy: Provide a maximum amount of direct instruction, using the most current tools- Each teacher uses a laptop hooked to a TV or video projector Teachers create materials on their computers and share the files with each other Improve teacher efficiency and increase teacher productivity-

  8. Hidalgo Technology Shared lesson planning/creation: Teachers create materials on their computers and share the files with each other K Teacher 1 Day 1, HM Increase in productivity: 75%!!!!! Day 2, HM K Teacher 2 Day 3, HM K Teacher 3 Day 4, HM K Teacher 4

  9. Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 Day 8 Day 9 Day 10 Day 11 Day 12 Day 13 Day 14 Day 15 Day 16 Hidalgo Technology Shared lesson planning/creation: Teachers create materials on their computers and share the files with each other K School 1 Increase in productivity: Exponential K School 2 K School 3 K School 4

  10. The Future?? • Shared Lesson Creation would standardize the curriculum, leading to teacher collaboration on improving instruction- • It would be similar to the concept of “open-source” computer code, where users are free to modify, improve, and share the improvements with the entire community- Language Arts Tech Services IMC Math Curriculum Bank Social Studies Instructional Support Science

  11. Why Integrate Technology? To Step Out Of The Dark Ages Of Education

  12. To Learn New Tools Designed to Engage Students

  13. To Move Your Teachers In a New Direction in Content Delivery

  14. Technology Integration What Should It Look Like? The Short Answer: Start with the classroom teacher! And get rid of this blackboard!!!

  15. To Equip is Not To Empower! Smart Boards!!!!! Yeah! We got technology!!! Lots of schools are buying them! Very few have a plan for properly training teachers to use them.

  16. Analysis: Smart Boards They have some nice features. Drawbacks: You have to turn your back on your class. Can waste time. Need the projector and laptop anyway. Software is not core.

  17. Essential Equipment: Laptop and projection device: TV’s work very well! ..to be used for direct instruction! ..NOT FOR GRADING! For example:

  18. The Fantastic Four Create and manipulate text boxes. Create and manipulate graphic objects. Utilize custom animation. Insert pictures, movies, and sounds. Examples: If your teachers learn these four skills, they will quickly be able to enhance their instruction.

  19. Do’s / Don’tsDon’t….. ...introduce Smart Boards before you train in using the computer for direct instruction. ….have a witch doctor in charge of your tech program. …think Accelerated Reader means you have good technology integration. …utilize “ready, FIRE! aim”technique when buying tech items. …allow kids to “know more than we do about technology”. They may learn to teach reading or be an administrator. ...don’t allow PowerPoints to be pulled off the web. They may not be standards-based or well designed. ….go single platform…..but don’t stress over it if you have to. …don’t teach kids to do things teachers haven’t learned to do.

  20. Do’s / Don’tsDo…. …emphasize tech-enhanced direct instruction. …have a plan for integrating technology!! …train, train, train. It will happen, but not by accident. …fund a Tech Person. Yes, you can afford it! …emphasize tech collaboration. …require computer lab and classroom computers to be planned for like any other resource. …makethe computer lab should be an extension of the classroom. …have TEACHERS provide the instruction in the lab. It is not a prep period. …encourage first implementers by giving them extra stuff. …have a“Geek of the Week” award as motivator.
