Ask • When applying to a school, a student should ask the following • What financial aid forms does the school require? • In addition to the FAFSA, does the school require the completion of an institutional or other aid form? • What are the filing deadlines for each required form? • What type of deadline is it?

Student Eligibility • High school diploma or equivalent • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen • Have a valid Social Security number • Be enrolled in an eligible degree or certificate program • Not be in default or owe an overpayment on a grant • Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) • Registered for Selective Service (males) • Sign a statement of educational purpose • No drug convictions based on Department of Education standards

Citizenship status Eligible noncitizen if you are: A U.S. permanent resident, with a Permanent Resident Card (I-551), or a conditional permanent resident (I-551C) Other eligible noncitizen with an Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) from the Department of Homeland Security showing any one of the following designations: "Refugee," "Asylum Granted," "Parolee” (I-94 confirms that you were paroled for a minimum of one year and status has not expired), T-Visa holder (T-1, T-2, T-3,etc.), or "Cuban-Haitian Entrant" The holder of a valid certification or eligibility letter from the Department of Health and Human Services showing a designation of "Victim of human trafficking" A resident of the Republic of Palau (PW), the Republic of the Marshall Islands (MH), or the Federated States of Micronesia (FM) A Canadian-born Native American under terms of the Jay Treaty

  32. Parent Information or Not? If the student answered “YES” to any question here, they will skip parent questions. For FAFSA filing purposes, the student is considered independent and is not required to provide parent information

Includes living in shelters, motels, cars, or temporarily living with other people because you had nowhere else to go. • “Unaccompanied” • You are not living in the physical custody of your parent or guardian • “Youth” • You are 21 years of age or younger or you are still enrolled in high school as of the day you sign this application

IRS Data Retrieval Tool • Federal Student Aid and the Internal Revenue Service collaborated to develop a solution that simplifies FAFSA completion • The IRS Data Retrieval tool will allow FAFSA on the Web applicants to request and retrieve their income and tax data from the IRS • Once the data is retrieved from the IRS, it can be transferred to FOTW

  43. When will the IRS Data Retrieval Tool be available? Will be available February 2012 If filed Electronically: 1-2 weeks after filing If filed Paper: 6-8 weeks after filing

  44. Who can use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool? • Initial and renewal FAFSA on the Web applicants and parents • Applicants and parents • With a valid SSN and FSA PIN • Who have completed a 2011 tax return • With no change in marital status since 12/31/11

  46. Applicant will now see the option to access the IRS Data Retrieval Tool… Applicant will have to authenticate using the FSA PIN.

  47. Applicant goes to“Get My Federal Income Tax Information” on the IRS web site… Applicants will have to authenticate with the IRS

  48. If the IRS authenticates the taxpayer, Federal Income Tax Info will be provided…
