California’s Labor Market Information Division (LMID) The State of California has a large labor force, needs numerous employees to collect/disseminate labor market information • LMID currently employs over 150 staff • Projections unit consist of 8 staff • Long-term/Short-term Statewide projections • Long-term Projections for 33 sub-state areas • Disseminate data in various products/publications

  3. Know Your Customers • Know what information/data are in demand • Internet tracking – “webstats” • New visitors • Page views • Average time on page • Dedicate your time and resources to what is in demand

  4. California Regional Analyst • Analyst that work in different regions of California presenting labor market information • Local Workforce Investment Boards • Community Colleges • Job Seekers/Students • Media • Familiar with local economy and employment trends • Works closely with Projections staff during the review process of sub-state projections

  5. CA Regional Analyst Products • Highest growth industries and occupations • Occupational projections data in higher demand • More relatable to the general public • Emphasis on total job openings (replacements + new growth) • “Survival Jobs” – occupations that tend to have a lot of opening and require little training • Tip sheets to help customers find information or navigate website

  6. Adding Value to Projections Data • Projections data shouldn’t be viewed as a stand-alone product • BLS Education and Training • OES Wage Estimates • Add meaning to projections data • Narratives, highlights, and methodology • Filtered/Sorted tables (Fastest Growing, Most Openings, Etc.) • Industry and Occupational Staffing Patterns • Include projections data in other LMI publications • Occupational Guides • Industry Cluster Analysis
