  5. Why are emergencies different? • Plans can change every day – expect the unexpected • Life-saving often comes before staff consultation • Visibility increases – perception and acceptance is critical • Security situation/access can change every day • Staff are usually under personal pressures

  6. Staff in Emergencies - Facts • Some staff will be stressed • Staff may be traumatised • Most staff will be working very hard • Most staff will want to do their very best • Team issues and arguments can flare up quickly • Team size can change quickly

The perfect emergency manager? • Can deal with staff issues quickly/bravely • Can manage own emotions/absorbs pressure • Security aware • Good with people • Cares about staff health, morale and motivation • Builds strong teams • Delegates and trusts • Leadership • Has a clear vision • Makes decisions with consistency, and explains why (not always consulting) • Leads by example – promoting teamwork, leading from behind
