  2. Fire Safety, Community Based Emergency Response Course 12 Fire Safety (C-BERG)

  3. Lesson Objectives Upon completion of this lesson, you will be able to: • Fire Chemistry: How fire occurs, classes of fire, and choosing the correct means to extinguish each type of fire. • Fire Hazards: Potential fire hazards in the home and workplace, and fire prevention strategies. • Fire Safety: How to evaluate fires, assess firefighting resources, and determine a course of action.

  5. Role of First Responders Extinguishing small fires before they become major fires Preventing additional fires by removing fuel sources Shutting off utilities, when necessary and safe to do so Assisting with evacuations where necessary

  6. Fire Chemistry

  7. Fire Classification A: Ordinary combustibles B: Flammable and combustible liquids C: Energized electrical equipment D: Combustible metals

  8. Reducing Fire Hazards • Electrical hazards • Natural gas hazards • Flammable or combustible liquids

  9. Reducing Fire Hazards in Home and Workplace Avoid the “electrical octopus” Don’t run cords under carpets Replace broken or frayed cords Maintain appliances

  10. Reducing Fire Hazards in Home and Workplace Install a natural gas detector Locate and label gas shutoffs

  11. Reducing Fire Hazards in Home and Workplace Read labels Use L.I.E.S. storage procedures: Limit Isolate Eliminate Separate

  12. Scene Sizeup • Scene size-up is a continual data-gathering process that will dictate whether to attempt fire suppression and planning for extinguishing the fire

  13. Answer these questions Can my buddy and I fight the fire safely? Do we have the right equipment? Are there other hazards? Is the building structurally damaged? Can we escape?

  14. Size-up Process • Gather facts • Assess and communicate the damage • Consider probabilities • Assess your own situation • Establish priorities • Make decisions • Develop plan of action • Take action • Evaluate progress

  15. Firefighting Resources Available Portable fire extinguishers Wet standpipes Confinement “Creative” resources

  16. Type of Fire Extinguishers Water Dry chemical Carbon dioxide Specialized fire extinguishers

  17. PASS Pull Aim Squeeze Sweep Test the extinguisher before approaching any fire

  18. Fire Suppression Safety DO……. • Use safety equipment • Work in a buddy system • Have a backup team • Have two ways to exit • Maintain a safe distance • Overhaul the fire

  19. Fire Suppression Safety DON’T……….. • Try to suppress large fires • Get too close • Fight it alone • Enter smoke-filled areas

  20. Review Upon completion of this lesson, you will be able to: • Fire Chemistry: How fire occurs, classes of fire, and choosing the correct means to extinguish each type of fire. • Fire Hazards: Potential fire hazards in the home and workplace, and fire prevention strategies. • Fire Safety: How to evaluate fires, assess firefighting resources, and determine a course of action.

  21. Review Cont. • Portable Fire Extinguishers: Types of portable fire extinguishers and how to operate them • Fire Suppression Safety: How to decide if you should attempt to extinguish a fire; how to approach and extinguish a fire safely
