  2. Sourcebook: Introduction to the novel Read the 1st two paragraphs of the novel Explain what Hurston is asserting about the difference between men and women. Do you think her assertion has any validity? Defend you position with three supports

  3. Sourcebook entry: Examining the Dialect • Examine the people’s speech in the 1st 3 chapters • Look for unusual expressions and record them in a chart format with an explanation or meaning/ purpose • Make at least 10 entries on your chart

Sourcebook Entry: TEWWG Figurative Language • Examine chapter 1 for Hurston’s use of figurative language • Record examples in your sourcebook include page # • Identify type of figurative language for each • Explain each example in terms of how it illustrates the type of figure of speech • Explain each example’s meaning, purpose and effect • Include 7 examples • Include at least 5 different types of figurative language
