  2. Which of the “8 Things” from the Dickinson article spoke to you the most?

  3. Filesharing • Allows me to share a document with the whole class • Box will pop up on your screen with the file name. • When it is done loading, click on the save file icon (3rd from left). Save the file somewhere you can easily find it. • Open the file. • The file is also posted on the wiki.

  4. Is the library more than a physical space?

  5. The Vision: • What do you want for your school library? • Take 5 minutes to free write about your ideal library & library program

  6. Breakout Rooms • When you’re in a break out room, your chat and audio is only heard by the other people in your room • I cannot hear you until I join your break out room. HOWEVER, I can see if you raise your hand for help. If you need me to join your room to answer a question, raise your hand. • Watch the chat for announcements from me – it the only way I can communicate with all rooms. • We’ll put the instructions on the whiteboard in each classroom. If you want to use the whiteboard for notes, just use the icon to create a blank whiteboard screen. Be sure to let me know if we need to import your whiteboard back into the main classroom for sharing.

  7. The Vision: • What do you want for your school library? • Swap your freewrite with a classmate & ask them to underline/highlight the parts of your freewrite that seem most powerful/appealing to them

  8. Sharing your free write with your partner • We will randomly assign you to rooms • Exchange your email address with your partner in the chat • Email your free write to your partner (attachment or paste in text of email) • Take your 10 minute break. Use the “away” button to indicate when you leave/return • Open & read your partner’s email • Highlight what you find most powerful or appealing. Make additional comments if you have time. Feel free to discuss with each other if you like. • Email it back • Open your own free write (you don’t have to read the comments yet)

  9. Hold that thought…

  10. Definitions • Vision statement – Defines the desired or intended future state of an organization or enterprise in terms of its fundamental and/or strategic direction. (Wikipedia) • Mission statement – Defines the fundamental purpose of an organization or enterprise, succinctly describing why it exists and what it does to achieve its vision. (Wikipedia)

  11. What’s the difference between a mission & a vision statement? • A mission and a vision are statements that have been written to guide certain actions and future states. • A mission is what an organization does, its action; a vision is what an organization would like to happen as a result of the action that it does. • Mission equals the action; vision is the ultimate result of the action. • Mission answers the question “What would not happen if we were not here as an organization?” Or more positively, “What change is achieved because we exist? • Vision answers the question: “What are the results, the ends, the consequences of our action?” • Vision looks forward; mission looks at today. http://www.axi.ca/tca/Jan2005/associatearticle_1.shtml

  12. The Vision: • What do you want for your school library? • Reread your own freewrite and pick out what things matter to you the most. • Hold those things in your mind as we talk about vision statements.

  13. Vision Statements Vision statements can take many forms. They answer the question: "What will success look like?" Their main purpose is to articulate the "dream" state of the library media center. Knowing the path and communicating it to all...on a day-to-day basis...are both essential to administering dynamic library media programs for students and staff. "The value in knowing your final destination (your vision) is that you can choose to take the specific paths that lead you there. Your action is intentional and keeps you pointed in the right direction." Sideroad Quoted from http://www.bcps.org/offices/lis/adm/assignments/vision.htm

  14. Sample vision statements from the business world • eHam.net - "To build the largest and most complete Amateur Radio community site on the Internet” • Coachville - Everyone is a coach • Bill Gates - There will be a personal computer on every desk running Microsoft software http://www.sideroad.com/Business_Communication/mission-and-vision-statement.html

  15. School Visions • A vision features a compelling picture or image of what the school can become in the future. • A vision is feasible and attainable. • A vision is connected to and articulates deeper values and hopes for the future. • A vision needs to be translated into actions and plans that can be and are implemented. • A vision will die if it is not regularly communicated. Putting a mission statement into a drawer will achieve nothing and might be counterproductive. http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/educatrs/leadrshp/le1comps.htm
