  2. A Starting Point for Problem Solving Many children think of mathematics as a subject that relies on their memorizing facts and practicing skills. But, the true test of children’s success in mathematics is when they can’t remember a fact or have forgotten a skill, they are able to think, reason, and solve problems and make sense of mathematical ideas.   6. Why Balanced Math? • Because it works… I’m proof! • 2006- OES 5th graders -92% Basic, Proficient, and Advanced on PACT • 2007 MSE 4th graders- 49.3% Basic, Proficient, and Advanced on PACT -went to 74.6% in 2008 as 5th graders- an increase of 25.3% • 2008 OES 3rd graders-65.5% met or above on PASS –went to 81.5% in 2009 as 4th graders- an increase of 16% • 2008 OES 4th graders-70.8% met or above on PASS- went to 84.6% met or above as 5th graders- an increase of 13.8%

  7. 2012 MATH Pass Scores • 3rd Grade= 71.8% meeting standard • 4th Grade= 67.9% meeting standard • 5th Grade= 65.9% meeting standard

  8. 2012-2013 School Goal • Based on 2011-12 PASS Math test results, by May 2013, the school will increase the number of students scoring Met or above from 70% to 75%: • Students in 4th grade scoring: • Not Met 1 will decrease from 10% to 8%. (4 to 3 students) • Not Met 2 will decrease from 18% to 15%. (7 to 6 students) • Met will maintain at 49%. (19 students) • Exemplary 4 will decrease from 13% to 10%. (5 to 4 students) •  Exemplary 5 will maintain at 18%. ( 7 students) • Students in 5th grade scoring: •  Not Met 1 will decrease from 18% to 11%. (5 to 3 students) • Not Met 2 will increase from 14% to 18%. (4 to 5 students) • Met will maintain at 43%. (12 students) •   Exemplary 4 will maintain at 25%. (7 students) • · Exemplary 5 will increase from 0% to 3%. (0 to 1 student)

  9. Annual Cluster Goal • Based on 2011-12 MAP Math test results, Numbers and • Operations was identified as our area of weakness. By Spring 2013, the results for the Numbers and Operations area of the Math MAP test in grades 3-5 will change from: • Third Grade: • · 21 Low to 19 Low (increasing 14 points) • · 11 Average to 9 Average (increasing 11 points) • · 4 High to 8 High (increasing 4 points) • Fourth Grade: • · 19 Low to 15 Low (increasing 12 points) • · 15 Average to 17 Average (increasing 9 points) • · 5 High to 7 High (increasing 4 points)_ • Fifth Grade: • · 12 Low to 10 Low (increasing 11 points) • · 12 Average to 10 Average (increasing 8 points) • · 5 High to 9 High (increasing 3 points)

  18. Just a note… • For the first two weeks, you may want to start out with some review standards from last year.

  19. “Spunky” Spiral Contest First week= • Monday- Pretest • Tuesday- you model/ they watch • Wednesday/ Thursday- you model/ they help • Friday- they do/ you help (in partners boys and girls) Second Week= • Monday-Thursday- they do/ you help (in partners boys and girls) • On Friday, you assess. Average the girls’ grades and the boys’ grades. The ones with the highest average will be declared the winners and will be announced on Tuesday mornings. (This will give you time to grade them.) • I will keep a graph of winners on my bulletin board. • The winning groups will be rewarded at the end of each 9-weeks. Any questions???

  20. Mental Math/ Fact Focus • One more/one less, before/after, a given number • Counting by twos, fives, tens • Estimation • Addition /Subtraction Facts • Division/ Multiplication Facts • Measurement Facts Should be based on your grade level standards!!!

  21. Mental Math Example (5k -3 to 5 each day) • 1. Count forward by one’s from 6 to 10. • 2. Count forward by one’s from 12 to 15. • 3. Count forward by one’s from 32 to 40.

  23. What will you develop? • Choose 4-5 standards (1 from each strand as mentioned earlier) for spiral review and a fact focus for the week. Develop a pre/post test. (5-10 questions) • Develop questions for Spiral review- 1 for each day (8) from each standard. Make sure they are varied and test-formatted. • Develop some mental math/ fact focus problems. (3 to 5 for 8 days)

  24. Develop/ Follow-up • Develop- Wednesday, August 29th during planning periods • Follow-up- Friday, August 31st (introduce and pretest) • Really, your 8 days will be Fri.-the following Thurs. since we’re off Monday.
