  3. Objective-Unit Learning Goal Students will be able to describe the conflict in the Northwest territories between the British, Native Americans, and settlers with 90% accuracy. EQ: How did Americans respond to the internal and external challenges of creating a new Nation?

  4. Review: Political Parties • Who wanted the States to have more power than the Fed. Govt.? • Jefferson • What was the fundamental difference between the Federalist and the Republicans? They had opposing views about the role and power of the Fed. Govt.

  5. Terms and People • Anthony Wayne – Revolutionary War hero who led American troops to victory against Native Americans • neutral – not favoring either side in a dispute • impressment – forcing people into public service or use • John Jay – government representative who negotiated the Jay Treaty with Britain in 1795

  6. How did the actions of Britain and France affect the United States? Britain was supporting Native American attacks on American settlers. Britain and France were seizing American ships to gain their support. Washington secured the Northwest Territory and encouraged Americans to stay neutral in European affairs.

  7. The Treaty of Paris gave America a vast area called the Northwest Territory. Mississippi River Northwest Territory Ohio River

  8. British troops remained in the Northwest Territory. They aided Native Americans in resisting American settlement. Northwest Territory Americans wanted British troops to withdraw. British troops

  9. America faced conflict with Native Americans in the Northwest Territory. Native Americans wanted to keep their lands. American leaders wanted to settle the West. They attacked many American settlements. They tried to force Native Americans to sell their lands.

Struggle over Lands • The Treaty of Paris that ended the Revolutionary War, the US won vast land North and West of the ORV. • The British has promised to vacate their forts in the area in a “reasonable” time…they had not. Surprised? • On top of that, they were supplying Native Americans with guns and ammunition • The British wanted to limit American settlement

  11. 2. Conflict with N.A. • Natives in the NW territories wanted to keep their lands, they attacked many American settlements in the 1780s. • The Fed. Gov. tried to force the NA to sell their land. • They succeeded, buying most NA land in Kentucky and part of Tennessee • But North of the ORV, tribes refused to sell even as white settlement continued

  12. 3. 1791 Battle of Wabash • In 1790, G.W. sends a small force to end the N.A. attacks on settlers • Gen. Arthur St. Clair, his job was to tell the Miami and Shawnee Indians to leave. • He was attacked by 1,200 Indian warriors led by Little Turtle (Miami Nation) and Blue Jacket (Shawnee) who ambushed him and they won. St. Clair lost 952 troops. • They were scalped and dismembered. • Americans wanted revenge.

  13. 4. 1794 Battle of Fallen Timbers: Revenge! • American Gen. Anthony Wayne (Gen. Mad Anthony) He had 4,600 troops who opposed the same 1,200 Shawnee and Miami Indians. • Gen. Wayne annihilates the Indians, he forced the surviving Indians to sign the Treaty of Greenville. • It gets ratified by the Senate in 1795 • Treaty says the Indians lost the battle therefore they have lost Ohio. • Today, that is most of the state of Ohio. • It also says American will pay the N.A. for Ohio for about 20,000 worth in goods. We give Natives tobacco and whiskey to make them trade partners…in other words get them addicted.

  14. In 1794, Americans led by General Anthony Wayne won a major victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. Native Americans defeated American troops in 1790 and 1791. Washington sent troops to end the Native American attacks on settlers.

  15. In the 1795Treaty of Greenville, Native American leaders gave up most of their lands. This land makes up present day Ohio.

  22. The French Revolution began in 1789. At first, most Americans supported the revolution. During the Reign of Terror, revolutionaries executed more than 17,000 people. After this, the revolution became controversial in America.

  23. United States By 1793, France and Britain were at war. Washington wanted America to remain neutral. France Britain Both countries wanted the U.S. to choose a side. They began stopping and seizing American ships.

  24. The British made matters worse by the impressment of sailors on American ships. They forced American sailors to serve in the British navy.

  25. Hamilton urged Washington to stay friendly with Britain. America Britain Britain purchased 75 percent of American exports. They supplied 90 percent of American imports.

  26. Washington sent John Jayto Britain. In 1795, Jay returned with the Jay Treaty. America agreed to: Britain agreed to: • pay debts owed to British merchants • pay for seized ships • leave the Northwest territory • stop aiding Native Americans • end impressment

  27. The Jay Treaty was controversial. Republicans opposed the treaty. They believed it gave too much to Britain and too little to America. Federalists were in favor of the treaty because it kept peace with Britain. Since Federalists controlled the Senate, the Jay Treaty passed.

  28. In 1796, Washington published his Farewell Address to fellow Americans. Washington made two main points: • He feared that political divisions would tear the nation apart. He believed that the United States should not become involved in European affairs.

  29. America had a functioning federal government. The economy was improving. The Northwest Territory was free from British troops and safe to settle. He had avoided war. Washington took pride in his accomplishments.
