  2. Using the Internet • Evaluate web sources carefully • Who is the author and where was the research conducted • Credentials of the author(s) • Are the arguments presented unbiased? • Are conclusions supported by data and references? • When was the information published?

  3. Figures • When using images/figures you need to include a brief summary of what the figure shows Figure 1. Rate of photosynthesis by marine phytoplankton as a function of temperature.

  4. Writing the Actual Paper • Introduction: • Introduce the subject, explain your rationale, and state your central question, objective or thesis • Orient the reader by summarizing pertinent literature in your field • Explain the rationale for the study and your major objectives • Include a thesis statement as the last sentence

Writing the Paper • Body of the paper • Build a focused discussion of your topic • Present data/information in a logical manner • Make sure that paragraphs flow and include transitions • Start more broad and work your way into the details • Document your paper thoroughly • Used quoted material sparingly

  6. Writing the Paper • Conclusion • End with general conclusions • The conclusion should bring the paper back around and tie everything together • Should present a final answer to the question

  7. Appendix • If you have to many images or figures to include in the body of the paper or the image/figure is too large they should be included in the appendix and reference accordingly • Still label them as if they were in the body so they can be referenced in the body of the paper

  8. Documenting the Paper • Acknowledge the source of all material that is not your own (which will be most of the information in this case) • MLA • APA • You MUST include a works cited page where you cite ALL sources that you used to write your paper
