Teagasc Staffing • Funded 70% by State Grant, with balance earned from competitive research contracts, extension fees etc. and trading income • Research services are provided by 150 researchers, 65 subject-matter specialists and 140 technicians at seven dedicated centres • There are almost 250 extension professionals based at county and local offices • Seven colleges and local training/research centres are staffed by college lecturers, technicians and education officers 155 staff

  8. Integrating Research and Knowledge Transfer Researchers create new knowledge Specialists mould this knowledge and other procured knowledge into information for stakeholders. Specialists interface and link very closely with Advisers in KT Directorate Advisers work with stakeholders to support their implementation of the new information/technology

Industry impacts • Globally competitive dairy production industry poised for significant growth based on grass-based production systems, best genetics and management • Eight largest beef exporter in the world • Manufacture 15% of world’s traded infant milk formula • Global reputation for clean, green food production • Serious engagement with c. 300 food companies in 2010 • Rooster potato – 60% of Irish crop grown valued at ~ €100m/yr • Annual phosphorus fertiliser use halved – saving of ~ €30m/yr • Almost all important public policy within agri-food and rural development, relies on analysis undertaken by Rural Economy, e.g. assisting government in relation to the CAP, Climate Change and WTO

  15. The Teagasc Researcher • Builds a team of 1 post doc and 2 post grads • Publishes in peer reviewed journals • Is successful in winning external grants • Collaborates nationally and internationally • Is held in high esteem by peers • Is effective in dissemination and knowledge transfer

Walsh Fellowship Scheme • Teagasc funds PhD students in collaboration with Universities/IOTs • Students funded by external grants also included • Student has University/IOT and Teagasc supervisor(s) • Generally located on Teagasc campus • Mainly Irish but also many international universities involved • 50 -60 new students start each year • Excellent to build collaboration and train young researchers
