  2. First off: What is Theme? • In a piece of literature, the theme is the main idea. This is what the writer wants to showabout the subject, which is basically what the work is about.

  3. Why Do I Think This is the Theme? • I believe that this is the theme of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet because there are many examples in the play to support this, such as Juliet forgiving Romeo after he killed her cousin, Tybalt. Tybalt meant a lot to Juliet, and right after she got the news she felt hatred toward Romeo. Shortly after, however, she realized that it was wrong to feel that way towards Romeo and that she should still love him since he was her husband.

  4. Another Example • Another example of this was when the Prince chose to banish Romeo rather than kill him. This was an act of love because Romeo avenged Mercutio, the Prince’s relative. Mercutio and Romeo were best friends, and the Prince believed that there had been enough death in the city that day, so he banished Romeo instead of adding to the catacombs of the families.

  5. One Last Example • Lastly, in the end, the two families ended the feud out of love for their children. They realized that their children died from the hate of their two families, so they decided to prevent any more deaths or tragedies, and they didn’t let Romeo and Juliet die in vain, by ending the feud.

  6. Throughout the Play • Hate was shown throughout the play, but love always triumphed over it.
