  1. Seattle Children’s Research Institute Science Adventure Lab! Celeste Eustis TEED 521 Community Resource Report Winter 2012 Bring a science lab to your classroom… for free!

  2. What is it? The Science Adventure Lab (SAL) is a state of the art traveling science lab funded through Seattle Children’s Hospital. Their missions is “….to deliver innovative educational experiences that inspire new passions for science, promote better health for all students, and enhance science education throughout Washington state by working in partnership with teachers, schools and communities.” (http://seattlechildrens.org/adventurelab/) The lab is designed for students in grades 4-8 to get experience conducting experiments with real scientific instruments in a professional research environment. SAL serves schools all over the state of Washington at no cost.

  3. What do they teach? • The Science Adventure Lab (SAL) teach the following modules: • Elementary (grades 4-6) • Seeking the Sugar Solution: Chemistry/Nutrition (Basic - 60 min) • Catch Your Breath! Exploring Respiratory Function and Asthma (Basic - 60 min) • Where Is Your DNA? DNA Isolation (Basic - 60 min) • Middle School (grades 6-8) • Seeking the Sugar Solution: Chemistry/Nutrition (Advanced - 75 min) • Catch Your Breath! Exploring Respiratory Function and Asthma (Advanced - 75 min) • Where Is Your DNA? DNA Isolation Curriculum (Advanced - 90 min) • Stop the Outbreak! Solve a Mystery Using DNA Fingerprinting (Advanced - 90 min) • Note: All of the modules are aligned with Washington state science, health and fitness, and math standards and they all include the relevant EALRs and GLEs.

  4. How does it work? There are three components to each module:  1) A pre-visit activity taught by the classroom teacher 2) Hands-on experiments and activities conducted aboard the Science Adventure Lab during a visit to the school 3) A post-visit activity taught by the classroom teacher

  5. How do I get them to visit my school? • The Science Adventure Lab gets many more applications than they can fulfill so it is a good idea to apply early. • Here are a few of the factors they consider when reviewing applications: • percentage of students receiving free and reduced lunch (They typically visit schools with 40% or higher) • math and science MSP scores • Location • access to other science programs (i.e. Pacific Science Center, UW etc…) • To request an application email: adventurelab@seattlechildrens.org • For more information visit their website: http://seattlechildrens.org/classes-community/community-programs/science-adventure-lab/
