  1. Monday, October 22, 2012 Anchorage Public School Reading/Language/Writing Students will read for informational text using the story “Look to the North.” Vocabulary words from the story are: tundra, ceases, bonding, piteously, surrender, and abundant. This week’s reading skill will focus on note-taking and citing references. Students will take a test on Friday on comprehension and vocabulary from the story. Math This week in math we will be reviewing what we know about factors, multiples & prime numbers for our quiz on Tuesday (12 Multiple Choice Q's & 2 Short Answer Q's). The rest of the week we will be solving multi-digit multiplication using the distributive property. Students will start using the website www.mathtrainer.com to help them master their multiplication facts.  Science Students will discuss how energy flows through a food chain and food web. We will remove a species from the food web and discuss the implications it has on our ecosystem. Students have a study island assignment to review Life Science. It is not due until the middle of November, but they can work on it as they have time. Social Studies This week in social studies we will do an in depth study on Kentucky's early explorers. We will study how England, France and Spain all claimed land and how conflicts arose over these land ownerships. Students will recognize all the contributions of early explorers made to the New World. After researching these explorers, students will do an opinionated writing activity. Preliminary research questions will be completed in the computer lab, as well as a graphic organizer before students start writing this essay. This is a three week project. Upcoming Dates: October 26th- Halloween Parade and Haunted House October 30th- Picture Retakes October 31st- Homeroom Class Halloween Parties. November 5th- Abe Lincoln presentation. November 6th- Parent / Teacher Conferences. No school for students. November 16th- 1st grading trimester ends.
