  4. Born on January 30, 1882 in Hyde Park, New York. • Dad, James Roosevelt, died in 1900 • Mother, Sara Roosevelt died in 1941 • Childhood interests in forestry helped found Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Early Years

  5. 1913-1920 assistant secretary of the Navy • Contracted polio in 1921 and was paralyzed for the rest of his life. • 1911-1913 New York state senator • 1928 Elected governor of the New York Rise to Power

  6. July 2, 1932- Roosevelt flies from Albany to Chicago to accept the Democratic nomination for President. He pledges “a New Deal for the American people.” • November 8, 1932- Roosevelt is elected President of the United States, defeating Herbert Hoover. • February 15, 1933- Guiseppe Zangara makes an assassination attempt in Miami, Florida, but Roosevelt is unhurt. Rise to Power

All Quiet on the Western Front was when WWI ended, this was also when Woodrow Wilson presented his 14 points, and proposed the League of Nations (which as used to help prevent further world wars.) • The roaring Twenties- was a time period of social, artistic, and cultural drive. It was also a time in which politics returned to normal. • Flappers were women during this time that started to make a name for themselves unacceptable behavior. (short skirts, bobbed hair, etc.) • Jazz Age was a time when Jazz music and dance emerged, there were flappers, gangsters, speakeasies (those who established a system of illegally sells alcoholic beverages.   11. 18th & 19th Amendments: • 18th Amendment was the prohibition (manufacturing, sale and transportation of liquor) of intoxicating beverages, 1919. Excluded religious purposes. Later, it was repealed. • 19th Amendment is women voting, 1920. • Red Scare was the nationwide fear of communist, socialists, and anarchists. • Kellogg-Briand Pact was the agreement to not use war as an instrument of a national policy, 1928. most states signed but lack of enforceability made it useless. • Harlem Renaissance is the “New Negro Movement”, the celebration of African-American heritage expressed through art, literature and dance.
