  1. Aurora Borealis and the Norse Valkyries Jacob Hebert

  2. Valkyries and the Aurora • Valkyries were the messengers of Odin, as well as the choosers of the slain brought to Valhalla • The Valkyries were armed with shields, spears, and helmets • Light glinting off of the Valkyries’ shields was known as the cause for the Aurora Borealis

  3. The Science Behind the Aurora • The Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field (also known as the Magnetosphere), and the sun disperses particles (electrons and protons) to earth – known as the solar wind • The solar wind reaches earth and bends, also disfiguring the magnetosphere • The solar wind collides with particles – usually oxygen and nitrogen – in the atmosphere, and the energy is released as visible light

  4. Reference Odin – The Sky God in Norse Mythology Ragnarok – The final battle against good (Odin) and evil (Loki), according to prophecy Solar Wind – The particles dispersed by the sun that travel to earth Valhalla – The Hall of the Slain, Odin’s Hall Valkyries – Odin’s messengers as well as the ones who take the bravest of the slain back to Valhalla to await Ragnarok
