  2. Reasons for War • Britain forcing American sailors to fight in their war with France (impressing) • Britain helping the Native Americans to keep us from moving west.

  3. Important Events • Britain burns down the White House. Dolly Madison saves the painting of George Washington. • Francis Scott Key writes the Star Spangled Banner at Ft. McHenry in Baltimore. • Andrew Jackson becomes a hero at the Battle of New Orleans.

  4. Important Outcomes • Treaty of Ghent signed • “The Era of Good Feelings” – America had defeated the British. • Everyone had a sense of nationalism (pride). • Everyone belonged to one political party (Democratic – Republicans).

  5. Monroe Doctrine • James Monroe (5th President) issues a doctrine to the world: • The Western Hemisphere is closed to future colonization. • The United States will not interfere in European conflicts. • If a country tries to colonize the Western Hemisphere they will be met with force.
