  1. Representation of man in the T.V series trailer of Scrubs. BY Daniel Hudson

  2. In this power point to talk about the representation of man in a trailer of the TV series, Scrubs , mainly I will be focusing on the character JD (John Dorian) played by Zach Braff but sometimes making references to other male characters.

  3. The first thing that we find when viewing the trailer, is that JD is clearly not a very manly character, in fact in most scenes, he embraces his femininity. This is made apparent at the very being of the trailer. The first time we see him, we see that he is posing is a very female, sexual way. I believe that this has been used to make sure that people that have never viewed the series have the correct first impressions about J.D., that he is a very feminine character

  4. In the next scene we see him in, we find him being carried by his best friend ‘Turk’ and screaming eagle a the top of his voice, yet again a sign that he is very feminine, the fact that he is the one being carried, and the fact that he is screaming in a very load and female way show this. The representation of J.D. being a very female character is continued throughout the trailer, the main example is the ‘relationship’ between J.D. and Turk.

  5. This relationship is still very feminine, ever though Turk is depicted as quite a manly character. Throughout the advert this relationship is often referred to as a ‘bromance’ or ‘guy love’, in fact the fact that these two appear to be deeply in love is played upon so much that a ‘guy love’ song has been played in a section of the video. We the two characters running towards each other in slow motion with this song playing in the background, a joke is then made that J.D. and Turk should run away together to get married.

  6. The overall representation given off from these two characters is that in this relationship, Turk is most certainly the ‘husband’, and J.D.is the ‘wife. For example the picture below shows the two characters in the past. We Turk standing up straight, muscular, and wearing a sport shirt, a very typical representation of a man, we then see J.D. located beside him he is hunched over, weak/cute looking, whilst wearing some kind of animal make up, a very different representation of man. It seem to be that the only times we see J.D.in the trailer, he is always found with Turk. I think by doing this it is an excellent way of showing off just how feminine he is.

  7. By using the above features I think that the representation on J.D., by using traditional stereotypes of men, is that of a ‘New Man’. He is clearly feminised/in touch with his feminine side and not afraid to show his emotions or what people think of him. He also a very equal relationship with his partner, both at home and at the workplace, making equal decisions over things like housework/childcare.

  8. For example he still wants to look after his child even though he is a man. I do believe that he doesn’t match some of the ‘criteria’ of the New Man though. For example he isn’t very concerned about his appearance and isn’t interested about fashion.

  9. Being a doctor he is very successful, making a lot of money meaning he is able to provide for his arriving baby, but I feel that being a doctor makes him more of a Protector. So overall I believe that the Character J.D., according to David Gilmore’s theory is a Protector.
